Does the MOE do as well as Colt M4 handguards at protecting the digits from heat? I’ve seen lots of stuff on how they feel, look, etc… but not much on their functionality. I like the wings around the FSB, as I tend to get aggressive with my hold and hit the base, and it is not pleasant. So, how does it function at say, a carbine course? Or even better, anyone use it on extended FA use?
I have not run a carbine course or run full auto with mine.
I did however, last week, shoot enough so that I couldn’t hold my gun at the magwell with a bare hand. (I don’t like VGFs and prefer to wedge my hand at where the mag well meets the rest of the recdeiver.
The gun was warm. . . no hot. well, kindof hot. The heat from the MOE was not bad. Although I will tell you that it does not have as much insulation (single layer) as an M4 guard.
My suggestion is for $30 give it a shot. If you don’t like them, you can sell them for $25.

IMHO the difference in heat transfer from M4 handguards vs the MOE handguards is negligible. I prefer the ergonomics of the MOE.
And like it was stated before, if you don’t like them you can move Magpul gear pretty easy it the used market.
I don’t notice any difference, but then again I don’t do full auto beta mag dumps.
Some people get all hot and bothered about the M4 handguards. I personally prefer the slimmer single layer ones. I prefer the MOE even more.

Thanks for the input guys. Thirty bucks isn’t a huge risk; I was just wondering. With all the talk about the looks, feel, features, etc… no one seemed to mention primary function, so I thought I’d ask.
My team just got back from a day at the range. This was the first time I ran the MOE hard, to include full auto fun. No problems at all with it. The ergonomics are much better than anything else I have used.
Thanks, good input. Guess I’ll have to get a set for my 6920.
Please report back whether it flexes using a VFG.
Won’t be using a VFG, sorry. Doubt it would flex though…
The top will get VERY hot. This was after about 120 rounds rapid-fire. The bottom is on par with standard carbine handguards.
I don’t remember there being a liner on the top guard…

It will only flex if you’re broom sticking the handguard. Otherwise its not bad but again, you’ve got to remember that these things were not created to be used with VFG’s its only an added benefit that you can run rails on the product.
This thread has convinced me to go ahead and try the MOE as I really prefer a slimmer handguard set up than the M-4 gives me.
I am assuming they will clear the stock front sling mount on my 6920. Is this correct?

The moes are not substantially heavier or lighter than the slim carbine handguards. They seem a bit lighter than the M4 handguards.
Botom line is they feel good, they look different and they are light. If you are looking to hang all kinds of crap off your gun, then these are probably not the ticket.
if you are building a a light, simple gun, these grips seem great. however, don’t make them out to be something they’re not. They’re not heavy duty. They’re not a rock solid rail mount.
If you want that, buy a permanently affixed rail or even an aluminum free float tube with accessory rails.

I have installed a set of MOE handguards on my 6933 with X300 on the FSB and I like the little bit of extra protection they give my support hand from the FSB. According to my scale my Colt M4 handguards that came off the gun weigh 9.3 oz with all four heat shields and the MOE weigh 9.2 with the single shield.
Data! Whoopie!
While a VFG would fit on an attached rail section, I would pass. There can be a fair amount of stress on the part and a regular railed HG would be stronger. I’ve seen the aftermath of a few broken bolt on applications.
Has MagPul let on that they will be offering these for Rifle length?
Thanks.
Does anyone know if these would work with a gas piston system?
I got a set and they seem not to fit my bushy heavy barrel carbine. ![]()
how do they not fit? do they not clear something? or are they sloppy loose?
