I’m wondering if I can get some opinions on the MOE and is it worth upgrading to the CTR? Is it worth a little more to upgrade to a VLTOR EMOD?
I have both the Magpul CTR and Magpul UBR. I love them both. If you are worried about weight, get the MOE or CTR. If you want the coolest looking one, get a Magpul UBR and take off the compartment panels… I put a heavier butt stock (UBR) on a 18" build to balance out the rifle. I used the CTR on a 16" build to keep it light. Having said that, I am going to build another AR-15 (16" barrel) with a UBR stock because I like it the best of all three.
i like the ctr cause i cant stand stock rattle.
I’ve owned them all and now use the Emod on every gun except my SPR, which has a PRS. For me, the Emod is much better than the magpul offerings. I love the look of the UBR, though.
Try some stocks if you can. Some people like the narrower stocks (CTR, MOE, UBR, normal M4 and A1/A2), and some like the ones with wider, angled cheek pieces (EMOD, ACS, SOPMOD). Personally, I strongly prefer the angled, wide cheek piece. The EMOD is my favorite, the ACS is a close second, and the SOPMOD is pretty decent as well.
What’s the rest of the gun like? I have Modstocks, Emods, CTRs, and MOEs (not to mention the M4 stock) and like them all for different guns.
FWIW, it’s my opinion that the stock is one of the last things you should change and that the cost:benefits is the lowest with stocks vs. optical sight, pistol grip, BUIS, light, sling, and even a FF rail/tube system.
Yep it’s going to be my last upgrade/mod. I have a full size Colt that I’m converting to a carbine. Now that you mention it, I do want it to be as light as possible. I have a Magpul MIAD grip and will probably get their mags and most likely the CTR just because of being able to attach a sling. I would consider the MOE even if it would rattle a little but not for the sling attachment.
I like the idea of a wide cheek piece is why I considered the VLTOR EMOD. The Magpul UBR and the SOPMOD are way too expensive.
I’ve heard the notched teeth in the EMOD tend to pull facial hair.
I’ve just now really considered the ACS.
So now it’s probably the CTR or a little more $ for the ACS.
I would also take a look at the new Vltor Imod stock.
I think the facial hair issue would be a deal breaker for me on any Vltor.
It’s not the teeth; it’s the small space between the stock and the buffer tube. If you shoot nose to charging handle, then all collapsible stocks should give you grief.
I have a MOD stock on one carbine and an ACS on another, not counting traditional M4 stocks. Both replaced MOE stocks.
I like the Vltor best of all. Just placed a pre-order with Vltor for the IMOD shipping in April and the ACS will get kicked to the curb when that shows up.
I like the cheek weld, weight, and short length. No issues with facial hair.

I found the facial hair comment on post #10 before I posted here but who knows. Hell, anything can happen. If nobody here has had that problem then I’m probably OK.

Email Vltor and they’ll get you the info. The price is/was just slightly higher then the basic and full kit MOD stocks.

never had a problem with a full beard, or later, a goatee, or even a 5-day scruff on wither of my E-mods. I have more problem with my beard and the zippers of some of my coats…
I just found a place w/in driving distance that had some on rifles. Even the EMOD was much more impressive than any Magpul to me. It was a tight fit and no wobble whatsoever.
+1 on that. I love it and it fits tight.
The cheek welds are a force to be reckoned with.
it’s a simple stock and is much better than a standard M4 stock… I had a CTR and it would pinch my finger when i closed the friction lock… guess i’m a clutz or something… LOL!!! i really don’t think CTR’s are worth the extra money… i may try a UBR on my next build but would like to see how it feels on a rifle before i shell out that kind of cash…
