Magpul Mag rebuild Kits for 5.56?

I am not understanding something. I am here in Ca and we get 10 round mags with our guns. If this is the law why can we buy Magpul 30 round rebuild kits anywhere? Anyone understand the reasons for this. I am moving becasue of the crazy gun laws here. Hopefully no other states have laws against high cap mags and I allready know that the bullet button is only here in Ca so at least that will be gone. Having a New Scar with a bullet button sucks. I love going shooting in NV with my friends. Use there mags and have fun. I just want high cap mags but legally.

It’s pretty simple. If you owned standard capacity magazines prior to 01 JAN 2000 (IIRC) then you are good to go. You can also refurbish them if they wear out, hence rebuilt kits for California and other Nazi states.

Yes it is a dumb law and yes you can get “rebuild” kits all over the place. However a lot of CA folks are playing with fire with the “rebuild” definition. Some think that taking apart a 30rd mag constitutes a rebuild kit. Maybe it does I have not read the law. But I doubt it. It is very gray.

This pretty much covers it. If you have standard capacity mags prior to the 10 round limitation you can “rebuild” them when parts wear out.

Ok lets say you buy a rebuild kit. It is a new mag in pieces. Would that not be just like owning all the pieces of a MG but not having it together?

You are correct. And if someone wants to push the issue they will get burned. I believe it may be a felony in California.

Rebuilt kits are only for magazines that were made and or possessed prior to that date.

a dissasembled magazine is not a magazine. Just parts.

from the Calguns Foundation Wiki:

Repairing existing large-capacity magazines

In a letter dated November 10, 2005, Deputy Attorney General Alison Merrilees answered a list of questions about the legality of repairing and replacing parts of legally possessed large-capacity magazines.

The letter clarifies that it is legal to replace parts of a legally possessed large-capacity magazine with parts of any vintage. It also states that the possession, sale, or import of all the parts of an otherwise prohibited large-capacity magazine is not illegal though assembling them into a new large-capacity magazine would be a crime.

The general rules regarding magazine repair appear to be that as long as one ends up with the same number of legally possessed large-capacity magazines, has a plausible path of replacement parts from the original possessed large-capacity magazine to the repaired magazine, and the magazine continues to work in the firearm it was originally designed to operate in, one would not be violating the law.

There are no restrictions on modifying a legally possessed large-capacity magazine to work in another firearm as long as the magazine continues to operate in the firearm it was originally designed for.
