MagPul Handguard & sling mounts

OK, maybe I’m behind the times, but I just ran across the MagPul HGs. Does anyone familiar with them think that the design would support a sling attachment (via Falcon rail) at the 10 o’clock position? Would it hold up to strenuous use?

I know I could go with a “tactical” rail HG, but I really don’t like them.

Just curious, are you talking about the MOE handguard that is plastic and i think $30.00?

I have Falcon Ergo polymer rails attached to my Magpul MOE hand guards. They work just fine.

They have been modified since. I actually drilled a hole in the handguards and cut the rails shorter so I could move then further foward and back so the take up less space on the handguards and move the attachment point further to the extremes.

Can’t comment on attaching to a Falcon rail, but if I know this works.

I have been thinking about getting one of these for my Colt Govt light weight upper. Are these sturdy enough when a front grip is attached. I gues I am skeptical because of the price point. I love Magpul stuff, I am just set off a bit because of the $30.00 price point.

Yup, as you have seen. I think we are in the same boat.

Rojas: If it works, I may try it. My greatest concern is that the attachment is solid and reliable. I have used GG&G’s rail for lights at the 2 o’clock position, but am not sure that I would trust that method with a sling attachment that must bear part of the weight of the rifle constantly. Do you use the rearward point for sling attachment?

Rob s: What is that do-dad? A drawer handle? But seriously, what is that? I’m willing to take a look at anything that works.

Thanks all.

I got it at Boater’s Warehouse, or Boatworld, or Boats-R-Us, or someplace like that. Not being a boater, I have no idea what it’s called.

I probably would have selected a cleat, and then accidentally impaled my thumb upon it. Looks like a great idea for a HK hook system. All you have to do now is paint it black and call it tactical.

Looks like an eye strap (or maybe a small chock).

EDIT: should have gone with my first guess. HERE is one in black nylon.

Rob_s: not to hijack my own thread but …

I’ve been checking out Tacticalyellowvisor and enjoyed several of the articles, and

I’ve been fooling around with your idea for placing the short Universal Wire Loop behind the delta ring. I may have come up with a couple of cheap, expedient ways to shorten the loop to keep the loop in front of the delta ring and behind the HGs, providing some protection for the gas tube and preventing the ring from flopping back and forth across the delta ring. I’ll post pics on the UWL thread later today.

Found a couple of possible alternates, and have sent RFI to Mesa Tactical for more info. What I really want is the exact setup in the first picture, with a ring like in the second picture to take an HK snap hook.

I’ve been noodling the same thing. I’m going to mount the backer on the VTAC sling swivel adaptor (ditching the swivel) to an ACE modified/Uncle Mike’s QD sling swivel. The 10-32 pitch stud on the QD swivel is the same as the female threads in VTAC backer:

I spent some time this week trying various sling mount configurations. I was unhappy with all but one.

Here are some photos and short descriptions of each.

Various sling mounts, rails and backing nuts.

First up was a sling swivel stud mounted to the backing nut form the Ergo grip rails Magpul sells. This is nice and clean setup, but I’m not crazy about these mounts:

Next was the idea from my post above. Using the same backer, I’ve a QD sling swivel/mount:

This mount sticks out far too much for my liking. I think this will likely snag on vests, clothing, other people, etc. Compare its prominence to the first mount:

With respect to these two ideas, I don’t like having one stud/backing plate to support the front of my SHTF rifle’s sling. I would think that these could easily work their way loose over time. I would also imagine that the load could be excessive on the handguard using such a small mount.

I decided to look for mounts with wider flanges and with at least two mounting points. On the suggestion above by Rob, I ordered a Mesa Tactical HK style mount. When it arrived, I was dissapointed in that is was too large as well:

Moreover, the edges of this mount are too sharp and could easily slice one’s hand. That, of course, can easily be remedied by a Dremel.

After toying around with this mount (and punching a couple of extra holes), I think I’ve arrived at a satisfactory solution for me. What I did was to place a gradual bend the clip end of the mount and to insert the mount though the hanguard vent so the flange is inside of the HG. This will support the rifle even if the screws fail since the flange is wider than the HG slot. It also reduces the prominence quite a bit. I smoothed the edges and rounded the inside part of the flange where it meets the top part of the handguard.

Photo from rear of HG.

I decided to mount this toward the rear of the HG as much as possible to prevent rubbing on my meaty part of my palm/thumb. Carbine HGs are small!

There is enough clearance for the heat sheilds and they do not have to be modified:

I employed the same backing plates as before:

Finished install with Magpul screws:

Now I need to coat it with something. Not sure if this will be black or FG.

gfelber:

Very cool presentation. Where did you get the hexagonal nut/screw sets?

Also, the reason I cited Falcon rails is that Brownell’s sells them along with the Magpul HGs, for some reason they do not seem to sell the rails from Ergo (I thought Ergo was Magpul). One site lists Falcon and Ergo as the same company; anyone know?

Did the rails work for you?

I’m sure I have a bunch of other questions for you. Great work.

I like the idea of feeding it through the slot.

I used mine upside down. I drilled another hole in the handguard for the rear-most screw and put the other through the slot. I also want to round the mount off a bit, and I may try to enlarge the hole as well.

I ran this with my modified BFG VCAS one-point on Tuesday and really liked it. Will be running it again today and will try to get some pictures.

Are those bolts you used in the end the same ones that came with the Mesa mount? And they’re threaded the same as the backing plates?

Here’s some pics of my setup. Shitty pics, better ones to follow at some point.

The bolts are from the MI short rails. I recall reading that you tried these for mounting a light? Yes, they are threaded the same.

On another note, there’s prectically no way to mount a light on the HG without it compromising or affecting my grip. However, I think one of the MI short rails might be able to fit on top of the MOE HG on the muzzle end using the Ergo backing plates/MI screws to clear the gas tube (Can’t verify this since my carbine is at Acdo). A light might work at 12 o’clock, can anyone verify?

Thanks. The rails will work, but I’m not inclined to use any since the HG is so damn small and my hands are large. Again a short 12 o’clock mount might work, though not recommended by Magpul.

The hex nuts and screws are from the Midwest Industries short forearm mounts MCTAR-02 and MCTAR-05.

Haven’t checked on who makes Ergo or Falcon, but it doesn’t appear to be Magpul.

That’s what I call “Slicker 'n Owl Doo”!

I’m thinking that I’ll steal your idea!
