Are there any practical differences between the “mil-spec” and “commercial” versions in terms of function/durability?
Or is it strictly a tube-size issue?

I have a “mil-spec” one. My brother has a “commercial” one. I can see no difference in the construction of the two other than the dimensional difference needed to fit the particular receiver extension.

If you have a commercial tube now, you’re certainly better off upgrading to the Milspec tube. They are stronger, I believe from the depth of the threads or something to that effect.
There are threads here discussing commercial vs. Milspec tubes.
It’s actually not for an AR. I’m pondering buying an XCR and it only takes the commercial version of the CTR per Robarm.
Roger that. I agree that the commercial and milspec CTR’s function the same.
This is correct.
