Greetings,
I am thinking about putting a Magpul CTR stock on my Colt Carbine. They seem to be popular. Do they work well? Likes or dislikes? How about the rubber buttpad? Worth the money?
I like mine, the rubber pad helps keep the rifle shouldered better, especially against chest rig straps. The cheekweld is good, but not to the degree of a SOPMOD stock, but its not half as bulky either. My only complaint is that my commercial CTR doesn’t lock up that tight, it still slides up and down the stock a good bit even after its been ‘cammed’ into place with the lever.
It’s probably because the commercial CTR has to fit all kinds of tubes and can’t be made to one specific pattern like the mil-spec CTR. I’m still 100% happy with it, so that should give you an indication they are very good!
Since you have the mil-spec tube, I’d jump on the rubber pad kit CTR, it should fit to your tube 100%.![]()

That it’s rigid

Price! I’m sure they could sell it for half the price and still make out like bandits.
Thanks, it looks like I will get one…![]()
I have a CTR stock on three of my four AR platforms. The last one has the older M93B stock. I also use the CTR on my duty rifle. Nice solid platform and no wiggling like the standard M4 stock. My cheek to stock is more comfortable. I equated the original stock as having someone jab a finger nail in my cheek every time I fired the weapon. While 5.56mm recoil is light, that did become very annoying. I have a rubber buttpad on one of the stocks. After using it for some time, I could go with or without it, nothing to impressive. What I am really looking forward to is the UBR:D
The price allows for Drake’s as well as the salaries for all of the guys that come out with new products like the MASADA.
I don’t mind paying them.
Im very happy with my CTR stock. As for the price it is what it is. $1400 for a
ta31doc ACOG. whats $100 for a stock or $300 to $400 for a rail system.
The CTR is an excellent buttstock. I prefer the rubber buttplate as it prevents the buttstock from slipping when in the shoulder (especially when wearing gear or armor).
The locking mechanism allows you to lock out the stock so there is no wobble between the stock and the receiver extention.
It has several sling mounting positions, both standard and quick detach.
Outstanding product that offers more than other stocks on the market at a fraction of the price.

Jeff

I’ve got 6 rifles and 5 of them wear CTRs. For the price (if you know where to buy and qualify), they are an awesome stock and well worth the money. They lock up on MilSpec tubes like a champ and the rubber buttpad should be a given when getting a CTR.
There’s a reason that all my rifles have CTRs on them, and that’s because Magpul (and LaRue) make the absolute best gear out there for rifles.
I just went to the CTR after years of the Milspec and Crane. I love it on 14.5 and 10.5 guns. It’s not quite right to me on 16" guns though.
I think the price is pretty good. ~$100? Especially compared to the $200 LMT Crane stocks. But that’s just me.
You have to remember that they have dealers and distr.'s in their as well. Could they sell the CTR for less? Sure could, but then they would get no dealer distribution. This is of course a bad thing.
The CTR retails at around $90 bucks. This is one of the best deals (along with the VLTOR) out there.

I know… business is business.
I’m just not motivated to get one, at least not yet. There are other more pressing things.
Still wouldn’t mind if it was a little more affordable. It all does add up. I’m a poor man with and expensive disease… I mean hobby. ![]()
I am actually thinking about getting one as well. I want to get ride of the CAA stock I have now. But how the hell do you know if you have a Mil-Spec buffer tube or a Commercial buffer tube. I bult my lower when I worked for a manufacturer and we just grabbed a buffer tube we had lying around.

I resisted the CTR for quite some time, and eventually caved in to it and the MIAD. Both are now on one of my 6933s, and I like both very much.
I agree that they are best on SBR-types, but don’t think they are lacking on 16" guns either.
I do not think that they are significantly better enough to ditch a SOPMOD or Vltor stock if that’s what you already have, but if you’re buying for the first time the CTR is an excellent choice.
Easiest way to tell a Mil-Spec tube from a commercial tube at a glance is that Mil-Spec tubes are four or five position and commercial tubes are six position.
Mil spec extension tubes will have the last three or four threads flattened.
Slap the calipers on the tube,
MilSpec tubes are 1.15" in diameter and commercial tubes are 1.17"
CAA stocks normally come as an assembly that includes the extension tube and are of the commercial diameter.
If you used a Mil-Spec tube the CAA stock probably fits with quite a bit of wobble because they also tend to run a bit generous in size.
I have a 6 position milspec tube.
Yeah, you really need to know what the hell you are talking about before giving advise.
All 5 of the CTRs I posted a pic of above are sitting on 6-position MilSpec tubes.
You cannot use the number of positions on the RE as proof that it is commercial. VLTOR uses 5 position (mil-spec), but LMT, Colt, CMT use 6 position (mil-spec as well)

Dick, this is the buffer tube ID card that ships with every CTR: http://www.magpul.com/pdfs/technotes/ctr/buffertubeid.pdf
Here is more detailed information on milspec and commercial tubes:

I hope that helps. If you’re still lost, just call 1.877.4MAGPUL and ask for Eric. He’ll talk your ear off about receiver extensions for as long as you want.
That’s exactly what I was looking for, but I was looking on Vltor’s site. ![]()
