Magpul BAD Lever and VLTOR MUR Upper

Hey Everyone,

I have a Noveske Upper with a MUR upper. I recently got a BAD to try out and put it on my Territorial Lower with a Colt LPK. I have noticed that because the MUR appears to be thicker and the cut out area for the bolt catch/release is shaped different than a standard upper, it appears to be riding. What I mean by that is when I cycle the bolt I can feel the bolt carrier dragging on the bolt catch when the BAD is installed. I am guessing some minor filing on the back of the BAD is in order but wanted to see if any one else has similar experience or feedback.

Thanks guys and looking forward to hearing from you.
Dave

I had to file down the back of a BAD lever to get it to clear on a a MUR upper. You will need to remove quite a bit of material, but you can get it to work.

Thanks, do you have any pics of your BAD?

is this for real? BAD doesn’t work well with MUR? anyone else have these issues?

No. Never had that issue on the forged or billet machined VLTOR uppers.

I got my MUR-A1 from Grant yesterday and put it on my BM lower which has a B.A.D. to test out this very thing.

The upper is stripped so I could not really go all out testing it, but I put the bolt and CH in the upper, attached it to the lower to see if the BAD would give it any problems.

I seemed to have none. I did not notice the BCG hanging up at all.

I installed the MUR by closing the pivot pin first, then closley looking at the BAD/Bolt catch as I lowered the MUR to close the take down pin. It did not seem to move though it was VERY close to the MUR Upper.

I cycled the bolt a few times with the charging handle, locked it back a few times. I did not drop the bolt because there is not bbl attached to the upper, so when I released it I slowed its movement with the CH.

I did not notice any interferece. Now, this could all be because my BM lower and or parts, ie bolt catch are out of spec, who knows, but I did not see any problems.

Having said that, I will still have to check all this again when I assemble the rifle with a Noveske lower and Grant’s LPK. [side note, color of Noveske lower does not match MUR :(]

I saw someone on this board say that there was an issue a while ago, and contacted VLTOR asking if they had heard anything. They said no issue was brought to their attention. Unfortunatly I no longer have the e-mails.

I’m also running a BAD on a MUR with no interference problems. I have a Noveske lower, MUR upper, and LPK from G&R. Just another sample of one to add to the mix.

my MUR also doesn’t match the color of my Noveske lower. i feel your pain.

thanks.

:oNoveske upper with:) mur on mega lower; bad runs just fine, no interference.

I just mounted this today. You can see the clearance between the lever and the MUR. Mine seems to fit fine.

Good Luck, Al

I will post pics of my upper and BAD later tonight. It is causing some minor drag on the carrier. I put the BAD on a different gun with a standard A3 upper and it fits fine. Not sure if something on my lower/upper is out of spec or if the BAD just needs fitting like the first poster who replied.

Thanks,
Dave

Thanks for the pics Al.

Please do. The BAD was designed to be compatible with as many uppers as possible, including the VLTOR. I’ve got a 10" VIS on my personal go to gun and love it.

eh… as long as it shoots true I think Ill be okay.

Ill try and get a pic up tonight of the MUR on the BM lower.

They work fine on my LMT’s and Colts but wont work on my M6A3… Its to tight and will lock the bolt back every time you charge the weapon.

No problems with the BAD on my MUR upper either…

Sorry I didn’t get this up last night, forgot I had a work spring party.

Here are some pics with and without the BAD. I also tried my MUR on other lowers with the BAD and had similar issues where it would ride the carrier a little with the BAD on. I think I figured out the area where contact is being made, the last pics shows just the back plate of the bad and I see where it is “wedging” against the upper.

ETA: The last pic is showing the contact. It appears to being caused by the clearance around the catch on the upper, especially on the top right corner if viewing the bolt catch straight on from the left side of the gun. I snapped the pics quick and then took a closer look. On the MUR there is a round cut out that is larger than the catch and the BAD appears to be making contact on the rim.

Let me know what you guys think. Is it possible my bolt catch is out of spec or the upper?

Thanks guys,
Dave

I’m wondering if the difference is the Forged versus Billet MURs. I have to mount the latter, one second.

[ETA] There IS A DIFFERENCE - the BAD makes contact on my billet MUR, not the forged.
BUT, it isn’t causing the bolt catch to drag or engage the BCG in any way.

Upon closer inspection, the rear of my BAD lever does contact the MUR upper in the round cut out for the bolt catch paddle. However, it does not push the catch up enough to cause dragging on the bolt inside the gun. Thus mine functions as intended.

This may be simply an issue of tolerance stacking up in your specific combination of parts.

Perhaps a different bolt catch may be worth trying out before resorting to metal removal.

Good Luck,
Al

I had a similar problem with a BAD lever on my M&P15 lower and LaRue Stealth upper.
Solved the problem by switching from a BAD to a Phase5Tactical EBRv2.

Some of the billet uppers have a bit more meat in them, and seem to be machined to closer tolerances.
The EBRv2 solves those issues.
