I’m looking at getting my first distance gun. as I’m a beginner with a decent grasp on fundamentals, I don’t want to drop a fortune into my initial platform. The furthest range I have at my disposal is 400m, with 1000m within a days drive (it’d be a weekend kinda thing for the 1000m range).
So i’m looking at three guns. The savage mod 10 in .308 and the howa 1500 in .308 and a howa 1500 in 300 win mag
My question is this:
What is the definition of a “magnum barrel”? Is it the same thing as a varmint heavy barrel? The reason I ask is the Howa 1500 in .308 comes in a “heavy varmint barrel” and a standard “hunting barrel” but the 1500 in 300 win mag is only available in a “magnum barrel”
my lean is towards the 300 win mag. For whatever reason it’s the caliber I have my head wrapped around buying. but I need the answer to the above question
if you are in southern AL, look at K&M. In northern AL, look at Brock’s gap / Steel city. great ranges where you can stretch it out.
whatever you do, don’t buy a 300 win mag for your first ‘long range’ gun. especially if you don’t want to spend a fortune. stick with the 308 or preferably a 260rem / 6.5 creedmoor or similar if you can find it.
okay. so according to the shilen the weight difference is almost 4 pounds at total length…
off to do some more research
Back from doing some research.
someone correct me if i’m wrong. Barrel weight does nothing to affect accuracy. The main thing that the weight is good for is for heat. The thicker the barrel the more rounds it can fire sequentially before the barrel could possibly warp. Which does nothing for the guy that is going to be firing at most 3-5 rounds at a time.
