magnification for 400-500yds?

I am working on a scope selection for an SPS Tactical in .308, intended for ranges out to 400-500yds, usually more like 200. Is 6x going to be sufficient for 400ish yards?

What type of targets are you planning to shoot at, and with what level of accuracy?

steel and paper, maybe the odd varmint on my BIL’s vineyard property. If the gun is roughly MOA, I’d like to be able to work up to that. (I have no illusions about my own skill level right now)

I’d want something in the 3.5-10 range or higher. 6x is fine, but for the smaller targets it is really nice to have magnification. I use a 4.5-14 on a varmint .223 and a straight 10x Mark 4 Leupold on my .308 heavy barrel. That said, I’d like to have a Nightforce in the 3.5-15x model…but I don’t have the dollars for it.
