What’s the usual life of Mag springs, & followers in 30 round P Mags? Also what’s a good mag spring for replacement. I should have plenty of mags to last me. I have also purchased 10 extra mags since Thanksgiving that are still packaged. Maybe I’m a idiot for thinking about stocking up on springs, and followers.
Have you tried contacting Magpul about this? I did a cursory search on this a while ago and couldn’t find any solid information with credible sources.
No. I may need to. I know Wolf makes great springs for pistol mags, but they list the AR mag springs as Colt AR15. Not sure if they are all the same, or not.
Let us assume that the Mag spring cycle life is the same as an action spring… both being Stainless steel… Dig?
5000 cycles times 28 rounds = 140,000 rounds… Hmmm… MORE than the life of 3 or 4 guns.
Stocking a bunch of springs/followers sounds like a waste to me, Jack.
Thanks! This is the reason I ask. I change my mag springs out every other year for my IDPA/ USPSA pistol mags, but wasn’t sure about my Pmags.
If I was worried I would probably buy 1-2 spare springs for every 10 mags. I think that corrosion from salt/dirt/whatever would ruin the springs before they reached the end of their life…
I’d guess the mag bodies would be unserviceable before a spring replacement was needed.

Im just saying that if I was a prepper or it just made my heart feel warm by having extras thats what I would do.
Personally id just use the money for more ammo.

I have not had to replace springs in any magazines that I purchased new yet. I have had to replace magazines after I stepped on them or the feed lips got damaged from dropping them on gravel or concrete.
If you pick up 10 extra mag springs, I would think they would last you a long while.
I have always heard that springs wear out but i have never seen it…i have the same p mags i used for 2 years 1 of that deployment fully loaded and they are still running perfect
Springs do wear out… from cycling… not from staying compressed.
So the point is that the cycle life of the mag spring exceeds the life of several weapons.
Followers should outlast many mag bodies unless you’re subjecting them to impacts or extreme heat inside the gun. Springs are a wear item. When in doubt, replace them with GI stainless springs, the SAW Red Spring, or other known-good. Some springs will last longer than others. The SAW springs I have from ~2004 are still going strong and have been in multiple mag bodies.
