M1A tweeks

This site is a wealth of information and I have learned a lot from everyone here. Therefore this is where I turn when I need gun help. Here is my problem, I’m trying to take some of the information I have learned about the AR platform and apply it to my M1A.

I have a M1A scout in a Troy MCS chassis (I realize this platform is harder to accurize and in some ways inferior to the AR, so please don’t turn this into a replace with XYZ rife thread). Bottom line is I’m looking to find the little tweaks that will improve reliability and function for example, stake the castle nut on the butt stock, and putting Loctite on the six screws in the stock, and accuracy is not an issue at this time. Anyone have any suggestions?

The rifle you have is not known for is accuracy 4" at 100 yards is what I have seen in my limited experience with the variant you have.

I also dont know much about the troy chassy. But you should google
M1a national match conditioning instructions.

Some things I have done to my rifle include, bedding the stock (wood, Mcmillan) reaming the flash hider, tuning the trigger, unitizing the gas cilinder, installing a sadlik NM guide rod and piston.

dfclin073, does your Troy MCS have a barrel tensioning screw on the lower half of the chassis? If so, try adjusting it to reduce group size. If your stock was made before July 2009, it will have the barrel tensioning screw (MCS Mod 0). The newer MCS Mod 1 stock lacks the barrel tensioning screw.

Thanks for the reply guys.

Yes, I have a Mod0, is the barrel tension screw located at rail B54?

Yes, that should be it. The tensioning screw is located at the forward end of the bottom rail.

Awesome, Ill play with the tension next time Im at the range.
Do you suggest I apply Loctite once I get the tension right?

I have a SOCOM II and all I did was change the op rod spring guide, bolt release/hold open, and add a oversize mag release. You can do much more but it gets expensive.

No, I would go to hand tight then add a 1/4 turn more. That should keep the tensioning screw from loosening and tighten your groups.
