M16's for Bureau Of Prisons

Out of curiosity, why not the M4? Carbines seem to be the thing nowadays.

The M4 is good for tight areas or needs for a smaller weapon. No need for that at the prisons. Pick the inmates off from the towers as needed… Rifle platform of the M16 would be fine for that.

Some places still use the mini-14.

For tower/yard shot I don’t think it would matter much if you used an A2 or M4.

Maybe they have a former Marine as their purchasing officer and he likes the full size M-16.:stuck_out_tongue:

.

If I were procuring rifles for a large agency, I would buy M4s because they come with a collapsible stock. This makes them more adaptable to different sized officers, as well as to summer and winter clothing.

My brother works for the BOP and shots could potentally be 300+ yards from the towers. If they would be able to hit a target at such ranges with the minimal training recieved is another story. I think they do have ACOGs if I remember right, but my brother said they were like looking though sunglasses so I don’t know.

Maybe the ACOG Reflex. Not the clearest sight picture.

bureau of prisons policy states that the towers are to be armed with a rifle. 1 institution had carbines and during american correctional association certification, they got hit and had to give up the carbines for rifles. shots could potentially average 300 yards, maybe longer depending on the layout.

its either colt or fn. ive seen both.

Due to longer shot probability and terminal performance issues at those ranges it makes sense to me they would go w/ a fullsize

Did not know the shots could be that long. I was thinking more of a downward shot. I guess if you had to fire across the yard you could get some distance fairly quick.
Thanks for the info.

I don’t think it has anything to do with that. The BOP isn’t buying surplus M16s. It really makes no sense having a carbine in the role that the BOP has for a long gun.

The M16s my agency received are totally serviceable (as long as you use good magazines).

I prefer the M4 as it is easier to get it in and out of a patrol car and the stock is collapsible so it fits no matter what I’m wearing and I can hand it to a smaller officer and it will fit them too. I can carry it in a dwelling, something I would never do with a M-16 (with 20" bbl and fixed stock).

I really enjoy shooting my ArmaLite M15A2 (with 20" bbl and fixed stock) but I bought a S&W M&P-15 (with 16" bbl and 6 position stock) for work.

duty load is q3131 wwb 55grainers.

Maybe they are for protection from outside the wire, when the inmates from Gitmo are eventually transfered to Fed Pens across the country there will be
an attempt at some time to spring them.
This hypoythesis is no more illogical than the one that prompted the supremes to grant these curs habeas corpus.
In fact it would be a great basis for another action novel, then screen rights,
Abdul escapes from Superslam.
