I teach soldiers in the 94M MOS at Fort Sill. Once a month they have a WTX and have to draw weapons from the weapons pool. In the past they have always drawn plain old M16A2’s. Today almost everyone drew A2’s with M4 Stocks. Is this something that the Army is doing overall, or just something isolated to this post?
Nope, not isolated to that post. There are a bunch of them out here in AFG as well. What my understanding is is that there was a package approved for M16s to fit an M4-style stock to them. From what I’ve seen, they all look like standard M4 stocks and reciever extensions. I thought it was just a bunch of cobbled together weapons initially, but the change was intentional.
The Marine Corps also has an approved stock kit that M16A4’s can be fitted with, but armories don’t install them because when the weapon is turned in, it has to be returned to the original configuration per the order.
I’m sure with a quick google search, the actual order or directive could be found. I just figured I would report what I know. The change was approved a while back, I think at the start of the year some time.
Very Canadian of you…that’s the direction we’ve gone up here: the C7A2.
I believe it is the Vltor A5 system. Uses a Rifle spring, in a slightly longer tube than standard carbine and a buffer that looks like a carbine but is bigger.
It improves the weapon function tremendously. Any weapon system its on it improves the function, except ive heard it causes issues with the 14.5 Middy guns.
My niece graduated basic from Ft. Sill last week or week before last.
It is actually the Army’s own buffer design designated the “H6”. I don’t really know the details on it, but I believe the buffer is slightly lighter weight than a standard H2 carbine buffer, but the tube and spring should be standard M4-style. If anyone has more info I would love to see it.
Here is a pic of one of them.

I’ve heard word of something like this in the near future, but I didn’t realize it was in action already. It seems like a good idea to me.
Good old Fort Sill. I almost miss it. Almost.
Ahhh… the good old “full sized carbine” as my friend calls it.
Congratulations are in order!
I would be careful with that assessment.
I’d say the A5 provides the same great performance as the rifle buffer in the smaller carbine package.
God thats gay!
Why is it gay?
every gun I’ve put it on it has smoothed out the action even more than a rifle buffer. IMO, it improves the function of every gun. didnt work so well with a 14.5 middy though, not sure why.
Rifle buffer doesn’t work so hot on my 14.5 middy either. 14.5 middy is it’s own animal.
that would explain alot, didnt try rifle buffer on it, so didnt compare.
as much as i like the 14.5 middy, i think a 14.5 carbine with a A5 would be soft shootin system
It looks bad Is what I was getting at. I remember a guy in Astan who did that to his A2 and it just looked so bad. I suppose it has its purpose for the guys of smaller stature but god it looks bad.
The Canadians have been using a configuration like that for a while. Though I have never handled one per se, I can see where it has it’s merits.
I am not a huge fan of the 18" barrels. But any loss of oal is going to benefit cqb activy.
M16A2s don’t have 18" barrels.
