I made a short video about the Garand, showing a couple bayonets for it, and then shooting it, with a full clip being shot in slow motion, which is kind of fun to watch and listen to. Sorry for the shooting in the background, it was a busy day at the range yesterday.
After watching a marathon session Band of Brothers and your posts, I want to get my own M1 garand.
I also saw your post on refinishing the garand and carbine stocks and it pretty cool on what a little time and effort could for old wood.

BoB was my inspiration to get a M1…Bought both of mine throught the CMP…That’s probably the best place to get one.Seeing how you’re in Columbus, the north store is only about 3hrs away…I would’nt wait too long,Within the last year or so,the supply of service grade M1’s seem to be drying up, as the wait times for orders (e-mail and snail mail) seem to get longer and the pickings at the north,south, stores get slimmer. IMO, they are true peices of American history,and deserve to be taken care of…

It is a SA armory 16" bayo made in 1906.

I just picked up a field grade M1 Garand. The stock was a bit rough but I stripped it down, restained and oiled it The iron was 100% all HRA and nice with a bit of handling wear. The bore was nice and bright and clean inside. I haven’t shot it yet but got two cans of Greek loose ammo to shoot up.
I recommend everyone grab up a field grade while they are to be had. I imagine that in 18 months they’ll all be gone, if not sooner.

I’ve shot a bunch of the Greek ammo myself, If you reload, the cases are reloadable…The price on that stuff (greek ammo) has gone through the roof…When I started buying it, it was $45 a can, (clipped and in bandoleers) I wish I would’ve bought more of it…
CMP is now selling only loose .30-06, still the best price anywhere. They say they want to move through a lot of their loose ammo and then they will put the clipped stuff back up for sale.
I too wish I had purchased more clipped/bandoliered ammo when I had a chance about six months ago.
Sure is convenient…loading up enbloc clips is a bit of a pain.
Thanks, I was pretty pleased with it when I snagged it on an auction site. Did not come with an original scabbard, but the bayo itself is the real deal…quite a piece of history…and wow, what a beast of a bayo.
Damn, now I feel like I need one. I’ve never owned one or shot one, but I want one because it is a part of history.

Yes, they are! I picked mine up quite by accident…Friend of mine who is a uniform collector and gun collector, swung by the house. (this was in the late 70’s) told me he saw a bayo for my rifle, at the flea market. (I had at the time a Smith-Corona '03A3, it stupidly got sold, but that’s another story), We went to the flea market and the guy still had it, complete with scabbard, blade still had cosmoline on it…$25 I could’nt get my wallet out fast enough…

That’s nothing…you should see some of the stuff my friend (the uniform collector) has…Some of it is museum grade quality,Some came from his father,a WWII combat vet,who it appears, took some time from the war to pick up some really nice “souvenirs”,while he was in Germany. Most of it though, came from flea markets, and from him rooting around at Goodwill before it became fashionable to go there…This guy has a nose for ferreting things out…

I actually have my Great-Uncle’s leather flying cap/helmet he used when in his pilot training in the pre-WWII Luftwaffe. I have been unable to determine precisely what it is, or how much it might be worth.
I got it many years ago after my grandfather died, his brother had given it to him as a gift.
I need somehow to get it checked out by somebody who may have some clue about these kinds of things.
I welcome any/all suggestions!
