What do you guys think of this vs a standard model M&P9? I decided recently to pick up an M&P based on what I’ve read here and the way it felt in my hand compared to the other guns I tried.
I was at the gun store today and they had one for $600 vs $500 for the standard model. With the $50 mail in rebate S&W has going on right now I decided to pick up the pro series and get the extra perks at what seemed like a pretty reasonable price.
I plan to keep it stock for awhile and get a good feel for the gun before I change anything, but in the future I may want to do some upgrades…what would you guys recommend? Is the apex sear an improvement over the stock configuration of the pro series? I’m not exactly sure what they’ve changed on the trigger, all I’ve been able to find so far is that it’s “better” and has a lighter pull. And how do you feel about the sights in comparison to other options.
Thanks, I tried searching for the answers but didn’t have much luck.
The pro is a decent deal if you’re going to stick with the nightsights.
If you’re going to change out the sights in my opinion the gun is an absolute waste.
The Pro sear is better than the stock sear but not by much. Quite frankly, if you want trigger work done look no further than the Apex parts. The pro sear still has too much overtravel. The break on the M&P with the apex sear is very similar in total travel length to a 1911. With the release of the Apex trigger bar next year we should see a reduction in the amount of pre travel too.
I also dont like the cheesy laser engraving on the slide but at the end of the day it hardly matters considering its a tool, not a fashion accessory.
Just go buy one of these and you’re set. It’s pretty much perfect, although I might be inclined to get Warren sights instead of the Bowie ones, though they are good, but it’s all personal preference:
I’ve got about 2600 rounds through a Pro 9 (5") with not a problem except 2 failures to reset around the 2K mark (with the gun never having been cleaned at to that point). I’m hoping this was due to crude but as you can see in the M&P problems thread, this is not altogether unheard of - albeit more correlated to the PC sear than the stock sear. More correlated to 9mm than larger calibers.
Again - all this is discussed in other threads, mostly the one I already mentioned.
So all that said, I love the pistol and it’s easy to hit well fast with it. IMO the trigger is too light for me to choose it for CCW. If I get another MP I’d prefer a stock trigger (many feel quite acceptable to me in the showroom lately) and shoot it smooth. The Julie Gloski edition with the Warren rear appeals to me and my lady like the MP grips.
