M&P Slide unlocking on Mag change fix

Hey guys,
I know this is an issue with M&Ps but I’m getting tired of it. Every time I practice my reloads 6 out of 10 times the slide will slam forward when I do a mag change.
Besides the negative tactical implications of this, its affecting my training a bit. Sometimes when I do the reload, I slam the mag in and I start to punch the gun out to re-engage the target just to realize that this time the slide stayed locked and I need to bring the gun back to center line to run the slide manually, then punch the gun out again.
As you can imagine, its a pain in the ass, it slows me down, and f***s with the development of muscle memory, so and I’m tired of it.

Has anyone found a fix, a mod, anything that will help with this?

thanks

Slide catches are PM item (about every 5K). Have you changed yours out?

This might help.

Autoforwarding is a known M&P deal - try to be a bit smoother about sending the magazine home - a touch less violent on there will help (slow drills down a touch). Still manually send the slide forward every time - even though I make mine autoforward fairly often anyway, the right muscle memory will ensure it, and not add time.

My M&P 9L has done that since it was new. Really hasn’t gotten worse over the last several thousand rounds. It’s a known issue. I’m sure I could make it not happen by gently tapping the magazine in place or some other half-assed measure, but I work hard to maintain consistency in my weapon manipulation and it doesn’t happen with any of the other pistols I shoot frequently. I pretty much ignore it, make sure I always maintain good muzzle discipline, only use the M&P as a range gun.

My M&P, Hk’s, and CZ’s all do this. They always have since brand new.

Pretty much. I will also add Glock to the list.

Most people do not realize that mag change is a “finesse” drill. So slamming mags home or striking the back of the grip is a no go.

My technique for inserting/“slamming”/finessing magazines into a semiautomatic pistol works great on my P30, my P229, my Glock 19, my PPS, and my PPQ without autoforwarding the slide. Same technique, same force, same “finesse” and the M&P autoforwards about 80% of the time.

It’s a defect.

Contact S&W and they will fix this for you. I’ve heard good results, too.

I check for this with every polymer framed pistol I buy.

Passed on an HK recently because of it.

I suspect they all do it if you slam hard enough, but I prefer that mine doesnt do it too easily with typical force.

I have to admit I do slam my mags with some force when I do my mag changes. But I’ve been doing this long enough to know this shouldn’t be doing it as easily or often. It’s not a finesse issue.
Even under duress you’ll slam that mag in with more force than you think, I know!!

I was hoping someone had figured out a mod or tweak that could resolve the issue. I guess I’ll have to call S&W and see what they tell me.

If I hit the mag flat and evenly with my hand its fine, if I hit it at an angle as I’m seating it (towards the base) then it auto forwards.

I thought autoforwarding was a feature not an issue.

I’ve grown used to it and expect it. I’ll admit, it was strange at 1st. But it doesn’t take long to get accustomed to.

If you like it, send it back. But I can’t imagine how long it’s gonna take to get back in this climate.

I haven’t had this problem before on either of my M&P’s. They auto foreward and chamber a round every time.

This happens in my full size but not my compact. At first it was a bit difficult when I would go back and forth, but it no longer bothers me.

All guns are different and must be treated so. For instance, you cannot treat a 1911 like you can a Glock (PM’s, cleaning, lubrication and mag changes).

I have an M&P that will auto forward if there is a strong breeze. I rarely have problem with it doing it because I do a proper mag change. Most people (IMHO) do not know how.

In the end, people can either become better at mag changes OR not utilize guns that are prone to it.

YMMV

Pulling the trigger (properly) is a finesse drill and if you slam it home, you will never hit anything. I think of mag changes in the same way.

If you read my first post, did you change it out at the 5k mark? If you are under that contact S&W.

Several years ago, I and a friend came up with a fix to the auto forwarding. We submitted it to S&W.

To date, they have not implemented our suggestions.

It was never designed as a feature.

Drive the gun down on the mag instead of driving the mag up into the gun.

This is an excellent way to put it.
