Did anyone else see the Guns and Ammo T.V. segment yesterday (I know, I know…one long commercial)about the new piston M&P? Has this already been discussed?
Off the shelf piston re-engineered by S&W (cant remember the manufacturer).
proprietary, one piece, carrier to address carrier tilt
an adjustable gas system with quick access to the piston for maintenance
I personally have no special need for a piston, and the piston band wagon is running out of room…but S&W has been dong some interestng things in the AR world of late. A reasonably priced quality piston that was mass produced would be a welcome addition to the market.
One piece carriers don’t cure carrier tilt. If they did the LMT, POF, Ruger, Ares, and others w/one piece carriers wouldn’t exhibit tilt as they currently do.
Sorry, I did not clarify. They claimed that the carrier design and dimensions addressed carrier tilt. They did not say that the one piece carrier corrected the tilt. I still don’t need a piston AR…
I’m seriously thinking of buying one of these if I can find one. It would be my first AR, and I’m attracted to the idea of a cleaner, cooler action and the additional reliability it offers.
The shocking thing to me, is that according to S&W it weighs the same or less than a lot of their DI M&P 15’s.
M&P15PSX
I realize a lot of AR purists disparage piston guns as unecessary and overly expensive, but hey, if it doesn’t add weight, a few hundred dollars isn’t too much to spend for some extra reliability. It seems like there’s a reason that H&K, Sig, Ruger, etc are using piston designs. But I’m just a noob, so take that for what it’s worth.
The only AR I’ve consistently had problems with was a piston AR.
Now, if you want a good piston AR then buy a LWRC.
H&K, Sig and Ruger aren’t really “going” to piston guns. Sig has always made piston/op-rod operated rifles. Ruger’s semi auto rifle was a chintzy scale model of the M14. And H&K’s made piston rifles in the past. None of those companies have made traditional direct-gas AR-15s.
I’ll give you that, but I figured added reliability was the whole point of the piston. I’m sure this has been hashed out many times on here, but in this test the gas piston equipped carbines seemed to best the standard M4 considerably: http://www.armytimes.com/news/2007/12/army_carbine_dusttest_071217/ ducks
Obviously the M&P15 with the adams system was not included in that test and thus has limited relevance to this discussion I suppose. What sort of problems did you have with yours and what kind of system was it? A retrofit? Just curious, as I’m trying to gather as much info as possible before I buy anything.
Indirect impingement systems are optimally suited for supressed/SBR use, in regards to the AR-15 platform. It isn’t inherently more reliable or cleaner.
