Since the M&P 10 has a mid length gas system, would cutting the barrel back to 16" affect anything in a negative way?? I really like the rifle but would want a 16" barrel on it.
Most of the M&P10 models have a very light profile between the gas block and muzzle which will likely be an issue if you want it rethreaded for a muzzle device. If you have the unthreaded heavier profile version you should be fine (as long as your smith doesn’t have a problem working with melonited steel).
Little Birdie told me that 16" models are on the way. I’d wait before hacking one up.

Well that figures. Wonder if Smith will sell the 16" barrels or at least refit my existing gun. Sigh…
Just take that extra long flash supressor off and replace it with a thread protector. That will get you well over 2".
Just my luck. :shout:
Bout my luck to. I just got my 18 inch barreled M&P Saturday, but oh well the longer barrel is still shorter than the m14 I traded for it. Is anyone else had trouble getting there rear takedown pin out mine is tight as hell but finally got it out but it was no easy task
On the green tag that tells of the rifles features wrapped around the hand guard, you will see that it says,“Patent pending Anti-play buffers”. If you look at the bottom of your upper (when rifle is open) you will see these four buffers. Two at the front and two at the rear. They only stick up a few thousandths and provide a snug upper to lower fit. looks like a great idea to me.
Mine started pretty tight but loosened up a bit after a few range sessions/cleanings.
Any word on S&W making these with the 16" barrel?
Nothing yet

I’m not sure the 18" could be cut, it’s melonited.
Anybody have any contact with S&W on the M&P 10 plans?
I’d love to get into the AR10 platform but it’s very cost prohibitive with the platforms that I like (larue predatar and the KAC SR25 EC[C])
seems like the M&P 10 would be a decent starting point that could be accessorized along the way, but I want a 16" barrel and don’t want to get a factory rifle that I immediately replace the barrel on.
Thanks
