LWRCi, Magpul & Federal go 6.8

LWRCi posted pictures of their new 6.8 psd, the new Magpul p-mags for it, and the soon-to-be announced Round that ATK developed for it. Figured some of you might find this interesting.

I’m looking forward to it, especially now that Federal is getting into the mix.

I’m surprised this info didn’t show up on the radar here sooner.

This is a significant positive development for the 6.8 and intermediate cartridges in general.

Here’s a cool picture.

1/2" AR550 plate shot at 100 yards from an 8.5" barrel using SSA AP 6.8 rounds.

This could be the future. Wow.

I think this is the pic that best sums the whole thing up. That’s the new rifle, a Magpul 6.8 p-mag, and Federal XM68__GD.

Yep, 30 rounds of Gold Dot power.

Definately a positive direction for the 6.8. Takes me closer to pulling the trigger on a 6.8 system.

Well, crap. I’ve thought about a 6.8 for years, never pulled the trigger. Was all set on a .300BLK, now this happens.

I’m right in the middle of a 6.8 build. The Magpul mags and more good ammo on top of the SSA offerings is good news indeed!

Score 1 for 6.8.

will those Pmags work on any AR lower or only the lwrci lower ?
will the federal ammo work in any 6.8 mag or any 6.8 mag ?

The new mags will only work with the new magwell.

The ammo is the big unknown at this point; however, a few pics were released early a few months back and I seem to remember that it was ~2.28". So PRI or the new CPD mags should work.

Are we still entertaining this 6.8 fantasy?

And to top it off we’re talking about some of LWRCi’s garbage guns?

I could care less about the LWRCi gun, because I’m not buying one. The 6.8 is far from a fantasy though. It’s an intermediate cartridge with greater terminal effect than the 5.56. You might say it’s the one we should’ve had all along. It’s also made significant inroads in the hunting community. Those guys prefer a cartridge that kills, rather than factoring casualty rates.

It would have been smarter to just get UICW chambered in 7.62x35mm AAC, that way they could use 5.56mm bolt carrier groups, and mags.

Within 300m, I think it does better than 6.8, and past 300m, 5.56mm does well enough.

Plus. 6.8mm works well in a short barrel, but 7.62AAC was DESIGNED for a short barrel.

And you wouldn’t need a piston for it…

Wow. You really believe that too, don’t you?

You don’t hunt the same things with a 5.56 that you do with a 6.8; different rounds for different reasons. I could be silly and ask for things like proof, anecdotal or otherwise, to support the assertion that the 5.56 has trouble killing and the 6.8 is significantly or noticeably better for hunting, but there’s no reason - you don’t use a 6.8 for groundhog any more than you use a 5.56 for Midwest deer.

There are handloaders who’ve been putting down midwest deer, and elk from what I understand with 5.56mm and no complaints for a while now.

The Six8 developments now coming to light were all contract-driven, and the contracting body specified 6.8 in the UCIW format. I don’t think “they” particularly cared about using 5.56 BCGs and mags.

300 BLK doesn’t have the case capacity to equal 6.8 from any barrel length.

As a military cartridge I don’t see a need for 6.8. Most rounds fired in combat are misses and quantity is key. However this round makes sense for LE based on its barrier penetrating abilities.

I’ll get one for hunting. I’m quite familiar with the AR, the cartridge will get the job done and if I run into someone in the woods cooking meth, growing pot or otherwise doing something that might make them take an ill advised action, I’m well armed.

I’m sorry, are you saying the 6.8 is LESS effective on groundhogs than 5.56? If so, please explain. If not, please explain why you “don’t” use a 6.8 on groundhogs?

For what I was saying, the terminal ballistics of the 6.8 are better than 5.56. That’s a quantifiable statistic so you’d be foolish to argue the point. You can argue that 5.56 is “good enough” (and I have), but not equal or better. The military can obsess over casualties vs. deaths all they want. If I ever have to shoot someone, I want incapacitation as quickly as possible under the conditions I’m most likely to encounter. I believe the 6.8 is going to be more “all conditions capable” than the 5.56. YMMV
