Lucky Shot...

That’s the name of my dog coming in tomorrow. She’s a greyhound who’s race name was Lucky Shot. How cool is that? Tag I had made for her:

With a name that cool, how could I change it?! :agree:

good on ya for rescuing her. Get ready for a huge baby, if you’ve never had one before. They typically want to be right beside you or laying beside/on you, constantly.

In for pics of dogs. Greyhounds are good dogs.

My wife and I have been contemplating getting a rescue race dog. We currently have four dogs named Remington, Tikka, Winchester, and Daisy.

I hear the rescue Greyhounds make great family dogs. Hope to see pics soon.

Congrats Will and pics bud forthcoming hopefully. When I was a little younger I used to work for my mother who was (still is) a veterinarian and we would on occassion get this ex racer greyhound in for boarding and I would feed him and take care of him. One of the best/friendliest/sweetest dogs I’ve ever met. Have wanted one ever since.

Waitin’ on the pics, also. And good on ya for the rescue adoption.

They are very smart and sweet dogs. Low key and low energy (which seems counter intuitive no doubt) and I think a good fit for me. I liked her at the shelter and when I saw the name, it was a lock

Good for you! I was debating on getting one a few years ago too. Yes they are couch potatoes. They expand all their energy in 30 seconds and thats it. From what i was told is that they dont like cold, or walking on hot asphalt and prefer to just lay around inside.

I eventually went with a different type of dog because i sometimes leave him with my parents and was afraid that if it saw a rabbit my mom wouldn’t be able to hold it

Awesome Will. Greyhounds are one of the most gentle dogs I have ever dealt with. A good friend growing up used to raise them. Great great great dogs. Perfect name too.

Here’s she is:

Good news:

She just seems like a great dog and I look forward to long walks, and the interesting and unique personality unique to the breed.

Bad news:

I took her out several times to get the idea clear that going to the bathroom was an outside activity and no luck. The tend to be very well trained right from track, but one thing are often not trained for it being housebroken…

She then promptly took a pee on a white shag rug. Ugh. She’s in her cage right now. I was hoping she was housebroken, but not so much.

I have been told greyhounds are easy to house break, and figure out quickly what you want, but not off to a great start. So, I’ll try and follow the advice of crate to outside until she goes outside, then praise her for it, and other behavioral dog training rules I am reading up on.

Advice?

Crate training is one of the best you can do, imo. Other than that, often trips outside, to avoid accidents as much as possible. Learn what motivates her, food, play etc… And then do what motivates her when she does what you want. Pretty simple, but it’s amazing how many people dick up the basics.

Lot of trips outside reinforced with treats every time she pees and poops outside.

Thanx gents.

Good looking dog.

Continue to take her out even if she doesn’t have to go. If she looks like she is about to go inside immediately take her out. Crate training works farely well. Rewards definately help. If you have another dog they will also learn from that dog as they are pack animals. This has worked with every dog I have owned from family dogs to the Lab I have now. Good luck, dogs truly are mans best friend.

Make it a routine. Crate to the same area in the yard every time you take her out. When you get to her spot tell her to “hurry up”, “go pottie” or whatever command you want. Then lots of praise when she goes. Treat her just like a puppy. After she wakes up, eats, or you let her out of her crate, take her out. Take her to the same spot every time. 2 weeks max and she should be good from there as long as you are consistent. When you are with her in the house and she stops paying attention to what she’s doing or gets up from laying down take her out. When you are not with her and she’s inside alone. Keep her in the crate.

Lots of great advice here, thanx gents. I think she will transition quickly. Already had success this morning.

She looks great Will.

Thanx. I’d say she’s settling in quickly
