I normally don’t use grease on any kind of firearm. Breakfree CLP is what I use, except the bolt and carrier of ARs, which get Breakfree LP.
But with the carry 1911 I put Pro-Gold grease sparingly on the slide rails and lugs, with very light CLP everywhere else. The grease doesn’t run so I don’t get lube all over my clothes.
Lugs and rails on my 1911’s get Tetra grease and Weapon Shield oil on everything else. I’ve been using Tetra grease for over 20 years, good stuff and works great.
Lube seems to be a hot topic. Guess you can never have too much lube! I’ve been using EWG on my slide, lug, bushing, etc., and Rotella synthetic 15w40 on the rest. I just got some “slide-glide” to try out with Slip2000. I want to see if it stays any cleaner.
With both of my 2 CCW 1911’s I use FP-10 on the rails and Tetra Gun Grease at the bushing. As they are both Les Baer products and are built relatively tight,I limit using grease to the bushing area only.
I use MPro7 on everything anymore. I don’t care for grease on 1911’s, especially in colder climates. I find that they trap a lot of residue and can slow the gun down in cold climates. YMMV
I have had great success with slide glide lite in warmer temps. Never used it in the winter. However, it will not do anything to help the gun stay cleaner. Perhaps it may even have the opposite effect. However, it should stay slick.
I use Mobil 1 for basic lube, and a light coat of high-temperature automotive bearing grease for the barrel/barrel hood. Still have a bit of a hard time paying ever-increasing amounts of money for ever-decreasing bottle sizes of the latest, greatest lube. I’m likely overdue for some enlightenment, but it’s hard to argue with what works.
I use TW-25B on my P30, it works great for carry and shooting here in Florida. If I was going to be carrying it in an extremely sandy environment i’d switch to a light weight synthetic oil. I use Royal Purple 5W-20 for the AR or the P30 when it’s going to get sandy.
I’ve used everything, and still come back to clp or motor oil. It just works. Mpro and weapon shield are a step above, but all things considered, this is still a 1911 pistol.
I have never had a failure from lack of lube on a 1911.
I don’t think you’re missing anything Chief. EWG looks like basic mil-grease to me and i’m going to bet that slide glide pretty much Mobil 1 synthetic grease. They are a bit thinner, but that’s easy enough to do. I picked up a small bottle of Slip2000 to try out. It runs pretty much the same as Mobil 1 or Rotella synthetic motor oil. When I’m out of what I have, I’ll go back to what I have in the garage. The only other product I’d like to at least try is “frog lube”. It gets a lot of good reviews.
I never used to grease my barrel or slide until recently and that I like. Seems to really smooth things out and stays wetter longer.
I used Breakfree CLP for years and never had a problem. I’m simple and prefer to use one product for both cleaning and lubrication.
I recently switched to MPro7 which meets the improved milspec standard for CLPs. It’s a little thicker than Breakfree and seems slicker. Needs less frequent re-application. No problems with my tightly fitted EDC Les Baer.
I read or heard somewhere If it slides grease it, If it rotates oil it. My 1911 gets a smudge of white grease on the slide and gun oil…3 in 1 whatever on the rest…never failed me
