Need some insight on what to choose for new optics on my DPMS AP4 in .308 w/ titan comp. I had an Eotech 516 on it and it worked pretty good for keeping a 20rd mag in a 6" circle at 200 yards, but I want more. I took the 4.5-14x40 Nikon Buckmaster off my 30-06 to see if I liked having glass on the AR and it was a night and day difference. I was able to literally cut my groups in half. Considering the weather and cheap ammunition, I am very pleased with the results.

Here is my quandary, I want to have a lower power magnification so I do not give up so much on close range shots. I was initially thinking about a 2.5-10x42 Monarch ($450), but now am thinking I might enjoy having something with a higher top end. I have been looking at the 2.5-16x50 Bushnell 6500 ($700)or a 2.5x12.5x42 Clearidge XP5 ($510). Both are above what I want to spend ($450 max), but I could swing it if I work a few off-duty gigs. I would much rather buy the Clearidge, and use the rest for more ammunition or other goodies.

I have already tried a magnifier for my Eotech and was not really that impressed. Too bulky, not as clear as a good optic, and not as much magnification as I would like. I will admit it is a cheap 5x magnifier, but I was not about to spend $400 on an Eotech or Aimpoint then have to buy a mount just to try it out.

Any suggestions? Owners have any complaints or comparisons? I have been reading so much my eyes are starting to bleed.

I am running a 2-7x Nikon with some irons on 45 degree mounts. I am shooting .223 and do more run and gun than anything else. I get to shoot 0-200+ yds with a slight rotation.

What’s the primary role of this rifle?

It is a multipurpose rifle. It is used for killing unwanted four legged critters (hogs and coyotes), punching paper (would like to start stretching its legs a bit), maybe a little run-n-gun, etc. Max range I shoot regularly is around 500 yards, would like to push it further if I have the opportunity. Usually don’t have shots under 60 yards, but I have had a few instances where I have had to take very quick shots at less than 25 yards (overzealous Coyote). I have a 1-4 on my little .22 plinker and it is easy to quickly acquire targets at closer ranges, but it lacks in top power for the longer ranges (obviously). I have never had an optic on my semi-autos with the exception of my .22’s. Usually just stick to irons and red dots. It has been suggested I get an offset 45 degree mount for a micro dot as well as using glass.

With a max range of 500, there’s nothing wrong with a 1-4 or 1-6 with a good reticle.

My eyes do not agree. I know some who can shoot 1x per 100 yard, but I am not one of them. :wink:
