I just picked up a M&P 15-22 yesterday to compliment my DD M4 ( lower cost training, etc.).
Both rifles have magpul furniture. The stock on my M4 is nice and tight with no looseness.
However, the M&P stock seems loose and rattles a bit. I thing it’s not the stock itself but the tube on the rear end of the rifle that the stock slides on is a bit too small in diameter??
Is there any quick fix for this issue? If I want to shoot in Appleseed events, I need solid stability from the stock. As is, it jiggles and could throw me off several MOA without the slightest movement.
Its a stacking of tolerances. The buffer tube may be slightly on the small side with the stock slightly on the large side, or vise versa. With the rifle shouldered, and you do your part. It should not be an issue. The standard m4 carbine stock has almost always has some wobble to it and people have used it without issue for years. If you are really really concerned about it and don’t wish to buy another stock, you could try shimming it a bit. Use a piece of bicycle inner tube between the buffer and stock. Or you could try the same with some gorilla tape, or electrical tape. Wont guarantee that will work as I have never bothered worrying about it. But it might be a start anyways.
As above, I doubt it will be an issue once you are shouldering it. If it really is that much of an issue you could always just swap it out for a fixed stock. Voila, no wobble.
Just shim the buffer tube by putting some duck tape on the the top of the tube. A half inch wide strip one or two inches long will work to tighten up the stock - problem solved and move on.
And NO WAY is a bit of rattle on your stock going to throw you off several MOA when shooting an Appleseed event at 25 yards… I shot an Appleseed event a few years ago and qualified “rifleman” on a full power 556 ar and my stock rattled too… Appleseed trains to a 4 MOA standard ( 1 inch group at 25 yards from prone, sling supported - as one example of their drills) so we aren’t talking about some long distance super precision sniper event where every big is critical.
Get some duck tape on your buffer tube, calm down and go have some fun shooting.
What they said. My MP-22 Magpul stock is no looser than anything else I have, that is to say - it’s not a problem. Just tape it if you want or use it as is.
The best solution Ive come up with. If you have some sticky back Velcro laying around cut a 1.5 x .125 inch long strip of the loop side and put it in the top of your buffer tube lengthwise at the back. Slide the stock over it. It will be tight. No more slop, no more rattle, rock solid.
