The removable Troy rail on the bottom has a little bit for forward/backward play (no side to side play). Is this typical for the Troy rail or typical to the S&W AR15T?
If so, has anyone come up with a good solution? shim or something similar?
I’m assuming you have the old type with the detent where you push the button to remove the bottom rail. These have a little slop to them.
It shouldn’t be a problem unless you mount a laser or something on the bottom. If it does bother you too much, then you can send it in to Troy and they will replace it with the new one that has a hex screw to secure the bottom rail.
Another thing you can do is if you just want it to stop wobbling, put some epoxy on the inside of the tabs or use a small o-ring. I’m sure you can make a shim but it would be hard, because it’d have to fit under the tabs.
Contacted Troy. They said it’s a known issue that they would replace it no problem. The only catch is that it has to have the Troy markings/logo and not the S&W M&P markings/logo.
Mine is definitely branded S&W so it’s off to S&W customer service.
I’m going to contact S&W and test out their legendary customer service.
FWIW, I just sent my M&P15 T upper back to them since
a) the Troy rail was loose on the bottom section (had the old plunger/button)
b) after a few thousand rounds, the gas block slipped loose ( I bought it used, so goodness knows how many rounds have actually been down the pipe)
On the suggestion from a friend at the local cop shop, I sent it in along with a letter explaining the problems. I got it back about a week after I sent it in. I got back an all new upper, with the allen-screw-locked bottom rail. I haven’t shot it yet, but I can’t wait to. The upper that they sent to me has extended feedramps and the barrel is marked 1:7. The upper that I sent to them was an earlier run (bought used), with a 1:9 barrel and had shorter feedramps.
Needless to say, I’m very happy with S&W’s CS. I’ve always heard good things about them, and I can now say so from personal experience. Turnaround time and problem resolution were excellent.
If you sent it in, I’m told its best to remove everything you can from the upper, ie BCG, BUIS, rail covers, vfg, etc. Just send the upper, barrel, and rails.
Tangent: woohoo! been lurking here for almost a year, and finally registered!
S&W is sending out a packing slip and box for me to ship the rifle back to them.
Surprised that they asked for the complete rifle, upper and lower. They said that they want to look over the whole thing for any other updates that are required as well.
This is my first experience with their customer service and so far I’m very impressed. I’ll give an update once I ship it to them and get it back.
Wonder what they will find (if anything) in addition to the Troy rails…
