Looking to start a small business

Good for you for wanting to stretch, start your own business, and get your nut. I had my own business for a while, consulting and training, and had fun with it…it supplied hobby money and I made some friends, but that market was a niche market and there were similar businesses. I could not parlay it into a full-time business, and eventually all the “business” stuff got in the way of having fun (licenses, insurance, taxes, permits, etc).

Fortunately for NC/unfortunately for you NC has a bunch of firearm-related training businesses; hell, even Chapel Hill has one (well, really in Durham…).

Which one are you referring to in Chapel Hill?

Most that I know are military based of some sort. My target clients are average joes looking to better protect their selfs. I only know of 5 companies, 2 of which are on here.

Per NC though I’ll be shooting on my land and will be “using” warehouse that my Dad’s business owns to conduct classrooms. Range can be anywhere.

Quest Tactical Solutions. I know nothing about them (aside from what I have seen on their FB page). Someone else asked me about them, and I was surprised that a firearms-training company could exist that close to the People’s Republic of Chapel Hill. There are others, of course…I see some advertising their services on Carolina Shooters Club.

I hope you do well…the more responsible and ‘quality’ businesses we can get, like what you are trying to do, the better for all of us.

My goal and structure is teach more indept conceal carry, carbine course, shotgun, offer defense classes in/out around the home by NRA but also put my experince and what I’ve learned and etc… That’s what amazing is we all learn and take bits from everyone and apply them.

Definitely need to be up to date on zoning, ordinances, locations of residences and the surrounding topography, etc.

If you’re only looking at a short range for training (50 yd and less with a massive backstop + loads of barriers to prevent stray bullets) you might be fine with 20 acres. However, you always have to plan for the worst…

We’re going on two years now with my local outdoor range being closed because of rent-a-cops not knowing how to properly use a firearm.

Thanks for the info, since it is not a public range alot of (atleast in nc) guidlines I don’t have to follow or don’t apply.

Ok guys had some off times this week and started to hammer out finer details.

I've decided on using Raven Rock but there is another local guy (1 hr-1.5 hours away) that has firearms and training at the end of their name.  Granted I am geared more toward the average Joe, marking wise it make sense to have firearm and training at the end because it tells you exactly what the business is about.  What I've been trying to do is not make it sound like the other guy or every other shop I've seen. Need to stand out (would like to).  Thoughts?

Sorry in my bunder I didn’t make any sense.

Raven Rock is a hour away not 30 minutes. And when I said “firearms and training” what I meant is everybody around here that has a gun store has “______guns/firearms” trying to be different but still the average joe know what I’m selling. Basically if a person reads the store they won’t think “oh Italian resturant” lol

But there is another gentleman that is a friend of mine that has a range 1-1.5 hours away from me and at the end of his name it is “firearms and training center” When you look in the phone book you’ll see

Raven Rock Firearms and Training and
_________ Firearms and Training.

This is why I’m trying to step away from Friearms and Training. We do have a gun store near (20-30 mins or so that is called “Trigger Happy”)
