Looking to start a small business

Hey everyone, I’m reaching out for your opinion to get a feel on a set of names. I’m looking to start (slowly) a training company geared toward civilians that are looking to better prepare their self around home/car/ where ever they may be, but also to break away from that and getting down to the basics for very new shooters.

I’ve been fighting with my self in terms of naming, which I lack a creative sense, so please be easy with the names listed below. If you have a suggestion please post up, if I you use your I’ll be sure to comp you.

I’m not looking to step on any toes nor to take business away from paying vendors here as I’m NOT going to be a gun shop. Maybe few years down the road. This is just something I’ve been wanting to do for a while and finally have the means ( and land) to do it.

I’ve been getting opinion on other owners of training groups and most have said “be discrete when naming” but most of these training groups are made up of ex-Military, ex-LEO. Since my target group is civilians I want to be found. As basic as it may sound, it would not like to use “guns” in the name and be like every other gun shop.

Without getting into the names yet, are you aware that there are TONS of training companies out there (and more to come)?

I am assuming you have a day job and would be doing this on the side right? If not, might want to rethink this idea.

As Ex-Military and a VSM instructor, there is NO WAY I could make a living as a firearms instructor (simply do not have the creds to do it).

I am assuming that you have all your NRA training certs right? Pistol, SG, HD, etc)?? If not get those.

Now to your names. I think it is a good idea to utilize the the surrounding area in your name. So if you are located near “Black Mountain” then I would go with that.

Good luck!

Thanks Grant for the info!

Yes sir, this would be on the side form my day job. Yes I have major of my NRA certs and continue to take some other class just about every month. Around my area (personal experince) alot of gun store just offer Conceal Carry Handgun Classes and that’s it. Or a intro to shooting for women only. This is just in my area. In my county there isn’t a self defense class or home defense class so looking to fill that niche. I’ve always enjoy teachin and always loved firearms so why not combine the two.

Naming wise Black Mountain is located 3/4 hours in NC. There’s really no landmarks other than “Raven Rock” and etc. Would like to have name where it oculd be training but also as a store IF I did one later down the road.

Where ya located? SC?

Central NC

while I cant do grammar  I am the creative type and have been very successful in business and done insanely well with brand marketing and stuff

IMHO the names are to long and dont roll off the tongue easy

name some successful business besides bed bath and beyond  that has 4 words ? not to many

better off with something more simple if your name is OK to put out then your name and something else tactical or training

names like alpha and ordnance and common things with training will just get you lost in the memory

GRtactical we know of course cause of Grant at least the GR is first and the name Grant you remember the GR side
Vickers you remember his name
if he was Delta combat training you would not remember him over a million others

or go with a acronym look at Pat “Mac” has
you wont remember
Tactics-Marksmanship-Adventure-Concepts-Security
but you will remember TMACS

you wont remember
Black Mountain Firearms Training
but you might remember BMF-Training (then spell it out later)
although I think of BMF as that trigger thing also and of course a bad M F dude
so I would do something more along BMFTraining.com but sure that is gone
but I think ya get the idea just a example of thinking
or just simple Black Mountain
and leave it at that ? now I might not do that cause of blackwater  but again more the thinking you dont always have to spell out what you do
I had a skateboard shop was named after my dog
I pulled in about 500K a year though we were pretty big and had nothing to do with skating !

do some reading on branding and on logos and how people remember things  even libraries have some good books that might help ya out if you are serious get the name down the first time around is important
best of luck

You mentioned Raven Rock being close.

Raven Rock Firearms
Raven Rock Ordnance
Raven Rock Consulting
Raven Rock Training
Raven Rock Strategies
Raven Rock Academy

Something with Black Mountain would sound good as well. But like mentioned below, keep it short and simple. Think BCM, Raven Concealment, Magpul, Vickers, etc.

Thanks for great help guys!! Raven Rock is a good 30-40 mins away and located in a different county. I google landmarks in my county and nothing other than Clemson state park. Think that would be a problem being in a different county? My thinking is people will hear the name and say “oh that’s in A county, when really it is in B county”

I wouldn’t think it would be a problem, 30 minutes is pretty close. And as far as what county it’s in…I would bet half the people out there probably couldn’t tell you what county they live in, let alone what county a certain landmark is in.

This is very true. We have a area that is in county A but has county B address and is 1-1.5 miles from the county B’s line. People get confused about it bad, it’s sad.

Thanks for the ideas guys and the encouragement. Still playing around with ideas/names.

I like how Raven Rock rolls of your tongue.

what ever you go with, register it as an LLC at least. it will save your personal ASSets if something happens.

As far as branding the name… Raven Rock is cool, but you might get some fudd trying to remember the name and spout of Rock River or something. Maybe not… but… maybe.

correct, this was the first thing I was going to do when decided a name.

Thanks man! Sent you a PM regarding plates

I to though about that, but I wouldn’t think it would be a big deal considering I’m not a AR manufacture. I’ll be selling firearms atleast but not right away. This adventure is something for me to do because I love teaching/firearms. Plus it would keep me busy, be awesome if it took off and could do it full time unlike my dead end job.

I need to get into whatever business you’re in. Jeez.

Ok guys had some off times this week and started to hammer out finer details.

I've decided on using Raven Rock but there is another local guy (1 hr-1.5 hours away) that has firearms and training at the end of their name. Granted I am geared more toward the average Joe, marking wise it make sense to have firearm and training at the end because it tells you exactly what the business is about. What I've been trying to do is not make it sound like the other guy or every other shop I've seen. Need to stand out (would like to). Thoughts?

If you do Raven Rock… it’s a small town in the video game Skyrim. And as a gaming nerd, I recommend working the words “Fus” “Ro” and “Dah” into things somehow.

(The three syllables form a “Shout” in the game called “Unrelenting Force”. So there is that. And ‘Fus-ro-dah’ is an internet meme - inspired by the game - to boot.)

Just FYI.

I actually played that game while I was on bed rest and couldn’t really do anything. Never finished it but I don’t think it’s one of those games you can finish.

I do like the “unreletenting force” idea though, thanks!

Been looking for land as well. What the min, you think one would need? I have 9 acres right now but looking to get land to build a house on/ have my range. Found 21 acres almost in the middle of no where (no neighbors to complain)

This might be worth a read.

Definitely need to be up to date on zoning, ordinances, locations of residences and the surrounding topography, etc.

If you’re only looking at a short range for training (50 yd and less with a massive backstop + loads of barriers to prevent stray bullets) you might be fine with 20 acres. However, you always have to plan for the worst…

We’re going on two years now with my local outdoor range being closed because of rent-a-cops not knowing how to properly use a firearm.
