Like many, I use my smartphone for daily news updates. For several years, I’ve used Google mobile news.
The positive:
Quick access from the home page Google
Quick headline driven topics e.g. World, US, Business, Tech
Customization for content and sequence of content inc, 2A news
The negative:
It’s become just too left leaning, losing objectivity like all other MSM
I’ve looked at the mobile versions of:
Newsmax
Drudge
Wall Street Journal
I have not found a solid replacement and would be interested in what members here have found to be a functional, objective, offering customization, news source from a mobile device.
Twitter. Seriously I use it as my news source. I follow a variety of news outlets and journalists and stay on top of things that way. You could also try AP News or see if Reuters has a service.
Twitter is actually very good, and by far and away my favorite ‘social app’ I follow. Just have to be selective in who you follow.
I do subscribe to the WSJ, and have their app in my iPhone’s ‘Newsstand’ folder. However I mostly browse it from a PC not on my phone.
I also use Instapaper, and use that to save articles for later. I can take links given off Twitter, and save them to Instapaper to read later. They work pretty well today. Instapaper has no ads, and when you go back to read stuff its a simple format thats easy to read.
Oh I forgot if you’re into the ‘feed’ type of stuff there is flip board, google currents, and a few other ‘all in one’ type feed apps. I don’t use any of those as Twitter does that for me because the people I follow usually post up pretty good stuff all day.
Al Jazeera’s opinion pieces are total crap but their news section is the best I’ve found. They seem to be one of the few news outlets that draws a clear distinction between news and opinion/commentary.
I also read The Economist but it isn’t a daily publication.
I have found this too, also The Drudge Report has the wires and search boxes for them and links to every major newspaper, plus all the conservative columnist.
It’s hard to get your news from just one source. I’d keep your Google app and just add some more.
