Hey I was looking at an aimpoint with a 3x magnifier in front of it that could rotate to the side. I was wondering if this is an effective set up and what people thought some of the up-sides and down-sides of this set are.

Aimpoint CompM3 with a 3xMag in a Samson FTS mount. The magnifier does exactly what you want it to. I had to go prone at a Carbine Course and put rounds on paper this past weekend and it worked like gangbusters.
However I absolutely hate the mount. The FTS mechanism works well enough, a single touch gets it out of your way, but the ARMS locking mechanism is the biggest piece of shite ever made. I didn’t want to run the entire course with the magnifier on my rifle, so it started out in a pouch on my chest rig.
When we went out to the 50 yard line to do some prone drills I decided it was time for some magnification. It took roughly 45 seconds of looking like a douchebag to get it strapped on to my SR-15.
The magnifier works well, but for my uses I could use a better, twist-off mount.

I have an Aimpoint ML3 with an Aimpoint 3X magnifier and LaRue mounts including the one that flips to the side. Even though I have never had anything else, I couldn’t imagine anything better.
Not even a good 1-4x for less money?
