Guys honestly have been on this board a few years and never even saw a fitness section.
I have looked at the subjects and forgive me for asking if it’s been brought up. Just wanted to see what you higher mileage runner work outs consist of, also frequency of shoe replacement, nutrition and such.
I’m 43 5’8" 170lbs. Twenty plus years of running my longer mile runs I average 8:30+ can dive into the high sixes on shorter stuff and ran a 5:53 mile this summer to see if I could still get into the fives. Out of the last 365 days I’ve missed 17 days,
200 miles plus a month)I cut back mileage based on feel and have to run daily because if I don’t I have restless leg syndrome and meds can’t correct it and only way I can sleep.
Two summer ago battled calf cramping 5 miles on up and thought it was hydration, stretching, and diet but even changing shoes every month I just couldn’t do minimalist shoes and a switch back to more traditional shoe (saucony omni 11-12) stopped all problems instantly.
Sorry all over the place just wanted to get a feel or idea from other guys about their running program.
I’m with you in that I have to run to sleep and function well. If I miss a couple days I get restless and generally irritable. I don’t listen to music when I run and typically run by myself. Running is how I decompress and work through things. I’m currently training for my first Marathon in November a few days after my 28th B-Day. My running schedule isn’t all thy different than before other than forcing myself to slow down and playing with nutrition and hydration.
My typical week consists of Monday rest and 5,7,10,7,long run(currently 15-20). Someday during the week I miss a day or to and have to play catch up. I’m on-call LE so work often gets in the way of my plans. I just ran a 7:50 mile 20 in prep for Marathon and run a 8-9 min 1.5 mile for PT test at work.
I just switch to fairly minimal Pearl’s that I love after working my way from overly supported Asics and the Brooks Pure Project line. I replace shoes every 450 miles or so.
Every once in a while a week break is good for the body.
For me, I was never a runner…I always wanted to run lightly and far, but never had the body or stride or whatever to manage that. I was always happier riding my bike more than running. So cycling became my “thing”, and I thoroughly enjoy it.
Some of the pluses for me:
no pain (I ride recumbents)
great cardio
gear/gadgets (satisfies the gear lust in me)
speed (it’s fun hitting 41mph on a downhill!)
thrills ( dodging the DFW metromess traffic)
The peaceful countryside once you get out of the metromess.
The solitude (it’s my quiet-time)
the camaraderie of group rides if I want them.
To me the next best thing to cycling is kayaking (* not white water)
Years ago I was. Rey much into running and was knocking down 4:50 miles and doing 10 mile races. I let life get in the way of things and stopped running for more than a few years, but recently got the fire again and have resumed training. While I’m not nearly as fast as I once was I’ve set a goal of completing at least 1 50k and 1 100k trail race next year.
