Long Term Review: PSA Barreled AR-15 Upper (Part 1)

Welcome to the first part of a long-term review of my new Palmetto State Armory AR-15 barreled upper. This review has no deadline, other than the upper breaking or wearing out, me running out of ammo, or the downfall of society as we know it. Since I already have enough reloading components to produce 10k+ rounds of .223 Remington, it probably won’t be the middle option.

I’ve been using Palmetto State Armory products for several years and have generally been happy. They generate both good and bad reviews, as should be expected by a major producer in the firearms market at the budget level. My review will be a sample of one, but it will be extensive.

This first post is about what the barreled upper is, and my inspection of it straight out of the box.

What I bought

I was interested in a fairly basic AR upper, and for the most part, that’s what I bought. The only real upgrade over the most budget of barreled uppers available is the free-float rail. Compared to what is available on Palmetto State Armory’s website as I write this, the free-float rail cost me an additional $30 over a barreled upper with plastic handguards and mid-length gas, and $70 over a barreled upper with plastic handguard and carbine gas.

In the other direction, for $150 more I could have bought a similarly equipped Premium barreled upper with a CHF barrel made by FN. It would have lacked a bolt carrier group and charging handle, which probably would have added approximately $100 more to the total cost.

Methodology of Testing

The goal of this test is to be “real world”. As such, I plan to shoot the gun a lot and maintain it like I normally would an AR-15. With this in mind, here are the basics of what I plan to do:

-Shoot the gun in both practice and competitions
-Keep a log on the round count, accurate within a few dozen rounds
-Maintain the rifle as I would any of my other AR-15s
-Correct any minor problems and document them here
-Contact Palmetto State Armory for any major problems that come up during the first 1000 rounds
-Document any jams and stoppages during practice sessions with pictures
-Perform a detailed cleaning at least every 1000 rounds and document the condition of major components with photographs
-Accuracy testing will be performed every 3000 rounds, approximately

Up Next: Function Testing and Accuracy with Bulk Ammo

The plan is, next week, to go out and shoot 300 rounds (10 magazines) of ammo to test the upper for basic function. Since these are the first rounds fired out of the gun, they will be recorded. I will then test the accuracy of the barrel with four FMJBT ammo choices that commonly get used for practice ammo.

This will be interesting since the upper receiver group parts are PSA’s “bread and butter” - the receiver, barrel, and BCG seem to be the same items as the Nitride Freedom line, with a different gas block and handguard.

One suggestion - contact PSA if there is a major problem regardless of the round count. It is a lifetime warranty.

I’ve reviewed PSA’s warranty and while they do cover defects, they don’t warranty a part against “normal wear”. I’ll play it by ear after the 1000 rounds.

I think that is the most reasonable approach. I mean if you have to replace gas rings at 2000 rounds that may be normal wear, but a broken bolt wouldn’t be.

I looked through the pictures and the gun looks great.

I have 2 PSA build kits that have cases under each of them. They are fine.

One thing I do on my PSA build kits is replace the buffer, buffer spring, and extractor springs with proven known parts. For buffer its usually an H2 or A5, and for the buffer and extractor springs I always use springco. Doing this has made my guns stupid reliable.

When PSA first got started, I decided to buy a cheap lightweight rifle to use as a back up for 3 gun and to carry predator hunting. It is a pencil barreled 16 in gun. I did put a CMC trigger in it, but it is stock otherwise. It is a loaner I give to people on occasion and it has seen many thousands of rounds. It has never had a problem.

This should be interesting to see about their current products. My experience with PSA products amounts to two “Premium” M-forgery uppers (allegedly FN barrels but marked Palmetto) mated to PSA lowers assembled with PSA lower build kits, all from back in their somewhat early days. I’ve never ran anything but M193 or hand loaded equivalent through them, and I have never, even once, experienced a malfunction. No issues at all.

The Plan

I headed out to the desert in public lands outside of Chapparal, NM. This is where I have done all by shooting outside of competitions for several years. Since it’s winter, I wore a T-shirt and cargo pants but did bring a jacket along too. Today will be the first shots out of the upper, as the lower has been in use already.

I brought 10 magazines loaded with 300 rounds, and those will be used to test the out-of-the-box function. I also bought four different types of budget FMJBT ammo, listed below, to see what kind of accuracy I am getting out of the barrel. I will do further accuracy testing with hand loads using quality bullets in the next part of my review.

-Hornady Frontier 5.56mm 62gr FMJBT
-Federal American Eagle .223 Remington 55gr FMJBT
-PMC Bronze .223 Remington 55gr FMJBT
-Tulammo .223 Remington 55gr FMJBT

Most shooting will be done with my Vortex Razor (1-6x24mm) but accuracy testing will be conducted while using my Nikon M-Tac (3-12x42mm)

Break-in Period?

In my first magazine, there was one jam. It appears the jam was caused by the bolt not traveling far enough back before attempting to strip the next round from the magazine. The jam was cleared in seconds and without tools. In the second magazine, this same type of jam happened two more times. The rest of the shooting continued without any jams or stoppages.

This includes the 300 cartridges fired and the approximately 70 rounds afterward used to test accuracy with the four varieties of ammo and sighting in both scopes.

I do not like break-in periods, and Palmetto State Armory does not warn of any in their advertising. At the same rate, everyone should conduct one on every firearm they own in a reasonable amount of time. This is not only important to confirm functionality but to identify any major problems in case a return to the manufacturer is needed.

Am I concerned? Not really. Three jams in the first two magazines and then none afterward isn’t something to worry me.

Under-gassed or Minimally Gassed?

The three jams that occurred were almost certainly caused by the bolt not traveling far back enough during cycling. For those very new to firearms and AR-15s specifically, the rifle functions by feeding the expanding gasses created by the burning gunpowder from the barrel back into the action.

An AR-15 cannot take an unlimited amount of gas. Too much gas fed back into the action will cause jams and premature parts breakage. Too little gas will cause jams that can become progressively worse in combination with cold weather, a dirty gun, or slightly underpowered ammo.

If I were designing this barrel, I would have had it feed a bit more gas back into the action. Every AR-15 with a .223 Wylde or 5.56mm chamber should run both .223 Remington and 5.56x45mm ammo without a problem. My upper, I believe, does this but with little wiggle room.

The trend in the AR-15 world is they tend to be over-gassed, but still functional. This does allow for weaker ammo, mostly practice ammo, to be used without problem. If it takes a bit of lifespan from a few parts it tends not to matter as most shooters don’t shoot enough to break parts anyway. My PSA upper featuring an FN-made chrome-lined barrel falls into this category.

Based on today’s shooting, mine is on the opposite end of the functional spectrum. Further testing is, of course, necessary. The warning signs I will be looking for are more jams of a similar nature, and the bolt not locking back on an empty magazine (not an issue today).

Accuracy Results

Below are the result of firing the four types of ammo. Each group was shot at 100 yards, which I confirmed with my rangefinder. Two 5-round groups were shot with each ammo and no scope adjustments were made in-between. The goal is to see two good groups centered around the same area of the target.

I did not make any attempt to zero the rifle with any type of ammo. My groups aren’t “good but off-center” or “bad but off-center”. I could adjust the point of impact with any of these brands of ammo if I wanted to. As I primarily shoot reloads and with a different scope, it is not worth the effort to take this step.

Hornady Frontier 5.56 62gr FMJBT

Without surprise, the Hornady ammo shot the best out of the four. Hornady is known for making quality FMJBT bullets at a good price. There is a price premium to be paid though, as other brands will always offer cheaper practice ammo when compared to Hornady.

And, at the end of the day, it’s still FMJBT. These bullets shouldn’t be used for self-defense, shouldn’t be used for hunting, and have no redeeming qualities at longer ranges. There are better bullets for all of the above.

Federal American Eagle .223 Remington 55gr FMJBT

These shot the worst out of my gun. If I were to speculate, I would say 9 out of 10 guns will shoot Hornady budget ammo better. Still though, I am testing a sample of one.

In the past, Federal AE has been available in bulk as cheap as any brass-cased ammo. If most of your shooting happens inside of 50 yards, short of key-holing bullets, accuracy results aren’t as important.

Tulammo .223 Remington 55gr FMJBT

The true budget option, steel-cased Tula will almost always be the cheapest .223 Remington bulk ammo. This does stand to change in the future, but it’s been the case for as long as I’ve been shooting AR-15s. It is known for being both underpowered and dirty, and some AR-15s just don’t like running it.

Still though, if I didn’t reload, I’d shoot a lot of it if was compatible with my gun.

PMC Bronze .223 Remington 55gr FMJBT

Commonly regarded as a solid option for brass-cased budget ammo, PMC Bronze isn’t going to win any award but is still pretty good. It will run in any functional AR-15, unlike steel-cased ammo. My results weren’t great but weren’t terrible either.

Why no M855 Ammo?

I didn’t test any M855 ammo because it’s trash, and there is no reason to use it when prices are equivalent. M855, and the SS109 bullet, have no redeeming qualities over standard FMJBT ammo. Just to be clear, I’ve reloaded thousands of SS109 bullets over the years, but only when they were being sold at extreme discounts.

Accuracy Testing Conclusion

As I stated in the video I made to go along with the unboxing inspection, PSA Freedom barrels aren’t known for great accuracy. My results, so far, are about what I expected them to be. But just to be clear, even an excellent barrel can still shoot budget ammunition pretty bad. People who value accuracy tend to reload.

What’s Next?

Part 3 will involve me trying to find some accurate loads using reloaded ammo. I have a variety of BTHP bullets among my reloading supplies. Thus far, the only AR-15 barrel I haven’t been able to get MOA or better accuracy out of I return to the manufacturer and received a refund.

Based on sighting in my scopes using my reloads, I think things are going to turn out just fine, but I will post the results either way.

In your test why didn’t you use Hornady Frontier 55gr since the other brands used were 55gr???

62gr was what was available on PSA when I bought the upper.

I do have some future content involving Hornady 55gr FMJBT bullets though, just reloaded by me. I’ll be comparing them to Berry’s and Magtech 55gr FMJBT bullets.

I picked up a 11.5” kit, as I wanted to build a Heat pistol (Colt 733). Didn’t want something to spend a lot on, nor something I wouldn’t want to get scratched up if I ran it hard. Got their nitrided barrel… not Freedom, but also not CHF. Completely a fun gun. Put in a Fostech trigger, because I wanted that third position… yet still a poor, so can’t afford a real machine gun. [emoji6]

You definitely did a good job picking a free floated upper. PSA has a hard time getting front sight blocks straight. The rear sight was all the way to the left to zero it.

Same time as I was having issues with my AK-P (aluminum top cover is softer than steel casings… in case people weren’t sure [emoji6]), but they took it back and got the block closer to center. Definitely good enough for government work… so appreciated that. If you buy a PSA upper with a front sight block, zero it with irons first… if off, let them take it back and fix it. PSA CS can be spotty, but a way to get thru is to reach then thru their industry section at AR15.com. Josiah is a good guy, and definitely makes up for a good chunk of PSA’s shortcomings.

I was looking at their 20” A4 with CHF, which I plan on doing a 1-6x LPVO. But was going to plan on zeroing it with a BUIS first, even though I wasn’t going to run one… just to confirm the front sight was aligned (prefer stuff good to go, because if I got bored with that setup and want to use it later on, I would rather send it back sooner over later). But luckily, I am taking an ADCO built A4 rifle on trade for my Tavor… so I should be able to skip all that PSA fun.

In my experience, neither. When an AR is under gassed, it short strokes. That means it doesn’t lock back on the last shot. From what I observed watching your video, the AR locked back on every mag. If it were either under gassed or minimally gassed, it would have failed to lock back on an empty mag at least once.

Before watching your video, I knew we’d see the AR choke on feeding. PSA uses a marginal extractor spring which loses control of the extracted round. When that happens, the case fouls the feeding of the fresh round causing the bolt to ride up over the base after it partially strips the round from the mag. This is exactly what happened in my PSA 16 inch middy. After changing mags, buffers, action springs, ammo and sending the upper back to PSA to have the feed ramps polished, what fixed the problem was the installation of a Colt extractor spring.

Right now, the problem is intermittent. But it’ll get worse. It won’t be long before you see an empty case jammed in the action. Change the extractor spring now and your problem will go away.

PS- Carbine weight buffers are too light. Replace it with an H buffer, or even better, H2.

I don’t think anything you said is an accurate interpretation of what happened.

Quality thread; thanks. I, too, am curious about the stoppages. Did I miss seeing which ammo they occurred with? If it occasionally doesn’t have enough juice to cycle, but does lock back, are you thinking inconsistent ammo? Do you have a chrono?

You have to hang upside down on the monkey bars and shoot steel case and brass alternating each round in a full clip!

Please explain how a short stroking AR locks back on an empty mag. If that’s not what you’re saying, please explain how an AR that isn’t short stroking has a failure to feed due to short stroking.

I’ve encountered this problem more than once. In each case, the problem wasn’t resolved until a good extractor spring was installed. I’ve watched slow motion videos of bolt over base malfunctions because it the extractor lost control of the empty. I’ve discussed this problem with Will Larson (IraqGunz).
