Shocked the hell out of me when I walked in with my buddy to shoot and the guy behind the counter tried to go high and to the right on my because he made my appendix carry G17 under my t-shirt. He asked if I was LEO and then told me not to come in there again with a loaded gun.
Now bear in mind, this place does not ask you to recite the 4 Rules nor take a test. Just sign your name, pay your money, rent a gun if you like, and go shoot. I am not embellishing when I say this is the least safest range I patronize because of the constant flagging and shooting of the ceiling and what not.
I can understand them posting a sign and asking people not to unholster weapons inside the store area due to the people you described. Personally, I would not patronize a place that does not let a person exercise their Constitutional right to defend themselves.
Down here in FLA the ranges I’ve been too have signs posted on the door no loaded Firearms unless LEO. The Range I use in Tampa a few years back after they had opened their new GS/R. Some nut shot up the place. Since then the signs of no loaded Firearms. But all the guys who work there carry. Which you can see not concealed.
The range I go to has a shot-up “No Firearms” sign adorning the entrance to the range.
Boggles my mind that a range wouldn’t allow legal CCW. If you had asked me, I would have guessed a gun store or range would be the last places to prohibit legal carry.
I’m guessing that they do so because they allow any thug off of the street (lots of gangbangers in there) to shoot without asking that they know the 4 rules.
One of the biggest gun clubs in western Ohio does NOT allow concealed carry on their premises.
When I confronted the club leadership they gave me all sorts of bullshit excuses. Their most pathetic one was that it is “unsafe” and that they are a “cold” range.
Needless to say I let my membership and all my efforts for the club lapse away to nothing.
I actually frequent Sharpshooters because it’s close to home and they’re open until 10PM every night, but everytime I see that damn sign on the door, I wish I lived closer to the NRA Range. My understanding is this rule was a reactionary measure after they had a couple ADs in the shop some years ago.
However, the sign should be twice as large and instead it should say, “All Firearms Must Remain Holstered or Cased Until On the Line”. I’m more worried about the guy with the “unloaded” gun in his hand than the guy with the loaded gun in his holster.
Personally i wont frequent a range that doesnt allow me to carry.
I was purchasing my last hunting rifle at a store with an indoor range and all the guys that work there openly carry. Kinda threw me for a loop though when i picked the rifle up to look down the barrel and had it approximately at a 30 degree angle and the gun put his hand on it and said “keep it pointed at the floor please”.
Dude…i’ve been in the military for 7 years…while deployed i kept my weapon all the time, with ammo, and NEVER even saw a negligent discharge. but i guess they are just being careful incase God miracles a bullet into the chamber
Most indoor places I’ve gone to are shops/ranges and all have had “unloaded and cased except LEO” signs. Every time it’s come up it is because of the “What are you shooting today?” question as they polp down something loaded from their waistband or hand a chambered firearm over the counter to sell.
i’m sure this is the biggest reason… dipshits walking in with loaded weapon in hand. but the signs dont ever say “CCW exempt,” not that i see anyway. i do know that one of the indoor ranges in Portland have the same sign “no loaded firearms except LEO”- but i’ve been told by the owner herself that they don’t give a rip if people are concealed carrying in and out of the range area.
It is for insurance reasons since they (Sharpshooters) are owned by the Ares group and don’t want the liability if some all star lets one rip in the showroom. If it really bothers you then vote with your feet (and wallet).
That’s my understanding, too. I asked one of the managers about it a long time ago, and he said the lawyers made them do it. He then quietly added, ‘you don’t see metal detectors at the door, do you?’ So, for the OP, I’m surprised that he called you out on it.
Yeah . . . I just commented to another poster in this thread the other day about the trend I’ve been noticing about the type of clientele that this range seems to be attracting.
The Range I go to most of the Guys there know me. After shooting at the indoor Range. I can Holster my Weapon concealed unoladed and walk around with no problems. Besides I have two loaded Mags in my vest pockets. As soon as I got outside. I’m locked and loaded.
It’s getting to be just like Shooters Paradise, at least on the weekends. During the week it’s not too bad, assuming you are not there when a security guard qualification is going on.
I’ve seen the guys there out people who were carrying, but at the same time I don’t think they hassle the regulars very much.
