Hey I don’t have much of a clue about this but hear goes. I’m looking at getting some load bearing gear. But Im not sure if I should go with a chest rig (either the military rack or condor mcr1), a 5.11 mille vest, or a military flc. Anyone have any advice or experience with any of those? At some point in the future I’m gonna get a soft armor vest so it needs to be able to go over that, fit snug( not flop around), and be very durable. Gonna be for SHTF use. Thanks y’all
Here is a place to start your reading in regards to chest rigs.
Second, stay away from Condor. For a little more you can get a much better rig. Check SKD for example, their all molle option is a solid rig.
Thanks buddy
Yes, stay away from Condor…it’s for airsofters. Also, while 5.11 makes excellent quality gear, there are many more options of chest rigs made in the US. Check out companies like Tactical Tailor, High Speed Gear, London Bridge Trading, Tyr, Mayflower, Tactical Assault Gear, and the list goes on. All are excellent quality and have proven themselves in Iraq and Afghanistan. Also, they are all made in the good ole USA. Let’s try to keep as many jobs at home as possible.
Thanks guys. What about eagle industries
I’m also planning to run a hydration bladder so is any of that compatible
Some of SKD’s rigs are made by Eagle. I have an old chest rig that was made by Eagle and no complaints, solid kit. Also had an Eagle Universal rig that I modded and was quite pleased with as well. That said, Eagle and Blackhawk are now owned by the same conglomerate and well Blackhawk isn’t thought of as highly as others on here and I tend to agree to a degree. If you can find one on the used market their Rhodesian rigs have what amounts to an almost cult following and if you are looking at only a chest rig it does have it’s perks. But, that said, YOU need to define what you need in the rig and what you are wanting out of it. Read up, think about things, try a few set ups out if you can and then make you purchase.
Thanks. There’s not really anywhere around here that has that stuff so I have to get gear online. Thanks again
If you want something made in the US, you have to be careful with Eagle as some of their stuff is now made in the Dominican Republic.
I use a mil issue flc. it’s adjustable and has alot of space. its one of my shtf setups and I’m going to set it up for “tracking”.
Plus you can find FLC’s at surplus stores for reasonable prices
I need more details. Read my Chest Rigs 101 that was linked in a post and answer the below questions. I will then be able to help you better.
Is this strictly for SHTF?
What is your primary long gun?
How much ammo are you thinking of carrying?
Do you want some basic items on your chest rig or just ammo? e.g. map, compuss, flashlight, first aid kit, and so on.
Chest rig. Stay away from vests or a FLC. They are outdated and no longer relevant.
no longer relevant if you follow what everyone else says.
Just SHTF. 4-5 mags but depends. Blow out bag. Weapon maintenance kit. Multi tool. NVD and a dump pouch.
Doc Sherms Chest Rig 101 is an excellent source of info as mentioned. I also learned a lot from John Mosbey’s thread from the standpoint of a more aggressive, longer term scenario
Take Care,
Buzz
Thanks
I’m ready to go back to LCE suspenders and a belt. By far the most comfortable, especially in hot weather. Stay light.
You may want to reconsider your weapon maintenance kit, depending on what you mean by that. If you have solid guns and take reasonable care of them, that space could be much better served by something else or nothing at all. The most I could see is a bottle of lube and multitool.
Mayflower R&C and Velocity Systems also make great stuff but I think the absolute best bang for the buck is SKD’s chest rig that comes in right around $100.

Thanks I look into that
Look at the ATS Low Profile chest rig.

It gives you a little modularity, is compact, you can wear it over armor, and sits at about $100.
You can add more mags to the front or some general purpose pouches as needed.
I’ve shied away from chest rigs for quite awhile now, instead running PCs so that I can don/doff the whole thing in one go, unless it gets really bad and I can only grab two things. Rifle and rack is always a good way to go.
My recommendations would be based upon what it is that you want to use the setup for. You say SHTF, but are you planning on home invasion? Grey State event? Natural disaster bug in? Bug out? Mass attack by terrorist dirt bags? Then you have to ask yourself what your role in such an event would be, would you help the locals by providing security after being deputized? Lone wolf securing family & friends? Each of these have different focus. If you’re mounted you’re setup will be different from a dismounted rig. MOUT/CQB, SDM, Assaulter? All different priorities on what goes on your rack.
