LMT LM8MRP slick handguard question

Hi All,

A couple of questions to those of you who’ve used LMT LM8MRP 5.56 rifle.
Does the slick handguard get hot after lets say a few mags have been shot in a fast sequence?
Do rail segments + plastic panels installed add more thickness to the handguard compared to the previous model?

Thanks in advance

I’ve got both the older and the newer LMT models to compare (thanks friends!).

  1. The slick handguard gets pretty hot after 4 mags fired. Gloves are needed to continue firing.
  2. Rail segments + plastic panels installed on the slick handguard are noticeably thicker than the old version’s permanent rails + panels. Not a comfortable solution.

Are there any plastic panels out there that can be directly attached to the slick handguard?

OK you just got me thinking.

I was jonesing for the slick rail but now thinking about how hot my 5.56 rifles get… they would really suck without the rail panels.

KAC’s newer E3 upper has a good solution, I think, providing both rails and plastic covers that can be attached directly to the handguard.

I’m very surprised LMT “overlooked” the heating part. The tips on the newly installed thin rubber strips, started smoking after about 3 mags in my test.

Not sure about continuous mag dumps but in normal use on the range running drills I’ve had no issues with the slick rail being too hot. The ability to attach only where u want, if u want, makes it much more ergonomic for me.
