I just took a LMT CQB MRP upper on trade, not knowing a lot about this.
I will not get this upper for about 3 more days and trying to find out all I can on it. This is a Gas Blow Back upper, but from what I have read, I can get a new barrel for this that is set up with a piston.
I would like to hear fist hand for a few of you how good this upper is. How hard is it to get the piston barrel set up?

Thank you for the info. Here is a pic. of the one I am getting. The lower I have is a DPMS and I am going to sale the lower once I get it in. Going to buy one more Black Rain, or maybe a LMT Lower to go with the upper.

That’s not an LMT bolt group.
incorrect…it could very easily be one of the “enhanced” BCG’s.
That is what I was told. I still has a day or 2 in shipping. I am going to sale the barrel and bolt set up and get a piston kit on it.
Incorrect back at you. The Enhanced carrier is not hard chromed, the bolt is NP3, not chrome, and it has three exhaust ports on the side, not two.

I should of asked more before the deal, but I still think I did real good. and traded a $1100.00 gun for it all.
That bolt is junk.
Like I said, I going to sale the bolt group and barrel and get a piston kit in it.
I am not a fan of DPMS at all.
FWIW it doesn’t have LMT sights either… Looks like a Matech and maybe Troy front, cant really tell though with the pics.
Sights do not mean anything to me. They are going to be sold as well. Acog going on top. (I do have a set of HK 416 sights I can use on this if I need too)
It was just simply an observation… regardless of the ACOG you will still need a proper BUIS…

No hands on experience with the CQB’s, but I have 2 rifle length MRP’s. I’d rate them as some of the best. Very solid, fit and finish are oustanding, miles of rail for all of your mounting needs. The rifle length is heavy, especially since I have LMT 18 in SS barrels in them, probably won’t be a factor since yours is CQB length and you’ll probably run a shorter barrel. The barrel has the ability to change quickly with the removal of 2 bolts. Sounds like a good idea but I really haven’t had a reason to change barrels, either fast or slow. I guess having that ability would be nice if you ever wanted to go to a different length or maybe .204 or 6.8. Bad part about that is that the barrel is a propriatary (sp?) system made by LMT so you wouldn’t be able to slap a Noveske, BCM, etc barrel in if you were so inclined. This is where I think the Vltor one piece upper out classes the LMT as you can use any standard barrel (I think this is true, no first hand knowledge but its what I’ve been told). As far as going piston, well that is an entirely different thread with a variety of answers. Both of mine are DI so I have no info to add as far as going piston. My DI’s have been solid and I feel no want/need to go piston. I’m a big fan of the MRP and I think you did well, mine were both in the $1500 dollar range (no sights, no bolt/BCG) but that was at the height of the presidential gun scare so the prices may have dropped a little. LMT makes some of the best stuff, I’m glad to own them, and I carry it everyday as a patrol rifle. I’d be happy with the swap you made-Norcal911
I would not call that real good, unless you did not like the gun you got rid of.
The piston setup is not that hard to find.
When I went to sell mine a couple of months ago I had to take a loss.
I really like the DI guns, but could not get used to the weird wear in the buffer tube from the carrier tilt with the piston upper.
I know people say it does not matter, but there was no way I could get used to it.
It is a really unique system that works well.
Just make sure you use a quality torque wrench when changing barrels.
If your question is simply is an MRP upper a top tier quality upper… The answer is a resounding YES. I own two and my 5.56 is my training and class rifle. It is the first one I grab for almost any reason. The barrel and caliber quick change is an excellent option to have and LMT’s quality is excellent! Depending on your use the MRP is difficult to beat.
To save you time in the future, do a simple search and I think all your answer will be answered.

When a brand new LMT CQB MRP can be had for $1900, I do not see how this was a very good deal, after you consider the cost of converting it to piston.
