Leupold VX-R vs Trijicon Accupoint?

So I am looking to get my first 1-4x scope. After playing some guys at the range I fell in love with them, but am kinda torn on two.

Im looking at the Trijicon Accupoint TR24G or the Leupold VX-R line of optics.

I did some searching but nothing came up with a direct comparison. One thing I like about the Leupold is the pricing. I know they are a excellent brand and make good durable optics as does Trijicon.

The VX-R is in the $450 range while the TR24’s are still $750-850 which is a big difference, but does that price difference stem from a $300 better optic? Or the name? How do these compare in terms of durability?

Also would yall recommend the VX-R or Patrol if I choose to go the Leupold route.

Anways appreciate any help in my decision to move beyond aimpoints and eotechs.

The biggest difference in terms of the actual scope is that the Trijicon is a true 1X whereas the Leupold is 1.25. That being said, I notice a fair amount of fisheye on the Trijicon that I don’t on the Leupold. The leupold has a more useful reticle (if you go Firedot SPR) than the Trijicon which is just a triangle or crosshair.

I have a TA11 Acog on my 14.5" “outside” gun and to me it’s the best compromise. Then again, I also have an SBR with an Aimpoint, so I don’t try to force the 14.5/ACOG to work inside or at super close distances.

Instead of turning this into a multi-optic debate thread, though, I’ll try to stick to your specific question. Truth be told, I was looking to buy a Leupold VX-R Patrol 1.25-4 when I got an offer to trade for the ACOG and took it. I can also pro-deal Trijicon products, so the Leupold vs Trijicon tradeoff was cost-neutral for me. I’d still choose the VX-R Patrol over the Accupoint.

This might save you a little money.

Agree with all that. Leupold is the better buy and IMO the glass is also better on the Leupy.

Also what exactly is the difference between the VX-R and the Patrol version?

I actually own both a Leupold VX-R Patrol 1.25-4 and a Trijicon TR24. The Patrol is on my LMT MWS, and the TR24 is on my POF P415. The Patrol is really light, and I love the reticle. The TR24 is more like a red dot (or green triangle, in this case) with magnification. The Patrol is more “precision”, and the TR24 is more “speed”.

Not much, aside from the reticle.

I was hoping you would say that. Looks like the VX-R shall be my
New optic.

I have the VX-R patrol with the SPR firedot and it’s pretty quick as well. JMO

Reticle and Turrets.

Yeah the SPR is great, but at 1.25x, the Patrol has a FOV of 75’, whereas the TR24 at 1x has a FOV of 97.5’. If the Patrol could go down to true 1x, it would be no contest.

Yeah but worse glass, and an almost useless reticle at distance. 75’ ain’t bad and I’d rather sacrifice that at range and have a mil/mil system to work with.

And save $2-300

And not have fisheye/image distortion, and have less weight.

I guess I’m just really not a fan of the Accupoint. As I alluded to earlier, I’ve been though a lot of AR optics and had occasion to play with dozens more at work. Do a thread search and you’ll find some of my longer posts detailing it all. Bottom line is that the Leupold beats the Accupoint 6 ways to Sunday.

Yeah the Patrol is the better choice for longer distances, which is why I put it on my 308.

When you go NTCH, the slight distortion around the edge that you see with the TR24 goes away, at least for me. I like having the fiber optic/tritium illumination, but the Patrol definitely has better glass. For the money, the Patrol is a great optic.

Does the 1.25x magnification of the VX-R make it weird in close distance?

It depends on what you want it to do. Is it as fast as an Aimpoint? That depends more on the shooter than the optic.

If you’re shooting mostly close distance, get an Aimpoint and be done. If you need distance precision, get a Nightforce 5.5-22 or an S&B Police Marksman.

Anything in between is going to be some sort of a compromise. I personally don’t believe the 1.25 is too much of a hindrance. Then again, it depends what you’re doing. If you’re clearing houses or other extreme close quarters stuff, as said above, you’ll be better off with a dot. With the 1.25X, once the sight picture is acquired, it’s easy to transition it across targets. What takes a second is going from looking at something with no magnification and then pulling up the magnified optic on that same target, and finding the target in the magnified sight picture.

However, outside of 15 or 20 yards, I don’t think you’ll notice much of a difference in the 1.25 vs a true 1X.

It’s slightly noticeable, but not at all distracting. It’s probably better than some “true 1x” scopes.

Alright thanks guys.

This thread sparked my interest again in a 1-4x optic, and the VX-R price is good considering I would sell my ACOG to fund this.

Though I am not sure if it will be a good trade-off, since I have a spare Aimpoint for future classes and for close range practice.

It’s probably worth noting that despite my comments above, I run a TA11 on my long upper and a T1 on my shorty.

Before purchasing the TR24, I strongly considered getting a TA33 or a TA11 with a green horseshoe and an offset H-1. I decided on the TR24 as a satisfactory (and cost-effective) compromise.
