First an apology to the mods for starting this thread in the wrong forum… hope this one is ok.
My Matched “Upper and Lower” in the beginning…
Specifically I am in the slow process of assembling a Mega Billet upper and lower. I have already decided upon the trigger a Giessele hispeed match, a PRi gas buster (because I have it already) and the Badger safety for the same reason.
My 2 favorite grips are the Sierra Precision and the MagPul MIAD
I’m looking at the Norgon ambi magazine release (comments on this part appreciated.)
That leaves the magazine release button (I want metal) the bolt release and the buffer tube/stock & endplate to find the best possible combination. I do not wish to have a single proprietary buffer source or setup, so will be a conventional multi-position rear end.
I’ve seen a lot of feet and/or toes in pictures but honestly, not a lot of animal skulls. Kudos for originality.
Other than that, I don’t have an answer to your question.
The worst is when room in the background looks like it’s been hit by a tornado.
If Battle arms makes it you should buy it, BCM mod 4, and no idea on Norgon ambi stuff. Nice start tho!
Edit: I’m pretty sure most of the mag releases are metal.
The Sierra Precision grip won’t be the best match with a Battle Arms Dev. Ambi Selector, seeing as how it’s a right-hand-specific grip. The MIAD would be more logical in this setup, if you go that route… especially the move towards an ambidextrous-friendly rifle, as the gist of your post suggests.
I passed on the Norgon and went with a Troy Ambi. “Bigger button,” less complex, less expensive. Only downside is that it might wear a little into the lower receiver when used, but that’s more of a cosmetic issue.
For the buffer tube, either Grant’s (at gandtactical.com) or BCM’s offerings are the best in terms of specification and price. The stock itself is something you have to “try a bunch and see what works best for you,” since ergonomics are such a major factor. Also the final weight of the upper will come into play - a MagPul UBR on a lightweight barrel makes for uncomfortable shooting and handling. With your aversion to having “a single proprietary buffer source or setup,” a Vltor A5 system wouldn’t be appropriate, though I still recommend it. Support for them is quite strong, and they run well on everything from rifle-length systems to Mk18 shorties.
Endplates, once again, are dependent on what you eventually hope to achieve, but a standard endplate, properly staked, still leaves you plenty of options later. Restricting yourself to a MagPul ASAP plate or Noveske QD-compatible endplate preclude those options (I’ve seen cases where people have slid their stock all the way in, inadvertently pressing the QD button with the stock, allowing the sling to detach unexpectedly when the stock was extended again).
Battle Arms Short Throw Selector, and the Knight’s Armament Magazine release. I don’t have big hands or long fingers and the KAC is easier to reach than the troy or norgon.
LOL… even better, computer on a card table along with roll of tissue and a giant pump bottle of hand lotion, rifle propped up on a lawn chair in front of the table…
I just put together a build using a DD LPK and only ended up using a couple springs and plungers. I used Seekins bolt catch and mag button, BAD ETP and EPP, Vltor A5 stock extension and nut, Sprinco green buffer spring, A5H3 Vltor buffer, Noveske QD endplate, Geissele SD-E trigger, BAD CASS 45 safety selector, and a BCM MOD 2 grip. The lower is a North Tech Billet receiver. I use a Magoul STR stock but I am digging the B5 stocks and will prob venture and change a few of my builds out. I recently had a chance to use a B5 and was very impressed.
If you looking at piecing together a lower parts kit I would also contact Grant as he allows the user to customize the kit. I have a crap load of the DD LPK parts left over not that I am complaining but in the future I will contacting Grant to get the parts I will actually be using from him.
I have not tried the Norgon parts but I can tell you that the parts I use work great and I am very happy with the way my lower turned out. Most if not everything was thought out and it’s a solid build. YMMV but I feel that no lower is complete without a Geissele trigger and the BAD selector & Pin set. The seekins bolt catch and mag release button is nice but it is not a necessity.
For upper parts BCM BCG, forward assist and dust cover, raptor CH.
These have been sold out everywhere are not be found except on ebay for like $200 plus. Not kidding. Unless you luck out and find the Seekins I’d go with the Colt bolt release.
Norgon or Colt for the mag catch.
Seekins Billet Mag Release
BAD-EPS and BAD-CASS are no brainers, seriously.
Colt castle nut.
End plate is determined by how you plan to mount your sling. I like the option of a QD provided by the Noveske.
You’ll want an enhanced trigger guard of some sort to cover the gap. Magpul is popular, I like the LWRCi.
Grip is all you.
Trigger: Geissele or Wilson.
BCM BCG and CH
Damn I thought by now they would be available. I am glad I had a friend that sent me over a couple of the seekins enhanced bolt catch in the beginning of June, I noticed then that they were sold out everywhere and looked on ebay and one went for $80 I laughed and made a phone call to a buddy that I knew had a stock pile of them. I really did not think they would ever go tfor $200. Thats crazy for a designer not so needed part where many others work just as well, it is efficient and it s a nice part but I would not spend BCM BCG money on one.
Quick picture of the lower.
I ran it last weekend without an issue, the entire build yielded a .5 inch group at 100 yards with Hornady V-MAX, 1-2 inch groups with M855 LC
OP I used a billet upper from North Tech and North Tech fluted barrel, Geissele nitride SGB. BCM BCG. With the upper I would not put too much thought into the dust cover and forward assist. I would however not skimp on the BCG.
If you can’t find a Seekins bolt-release for the MSRP of $19.99, you either aren’t looking hard enough or you don’t know how to sign up for in-stock notifications. They are available and I have purchased 3 in the past 2 months from 3 different places (DSG, AIM, and Rainier Arms).
Small parts…
Colt or G&R springs, pins detents etc.
Geissele trigger
I will give the nod to the Norgon mag release, too many parts in the KAC for my liking and I don’t like the round button.
I don’t like the Seekens bolt release but it’s because of aesthetics and I don’t know if the weight of the larger catch will interfere with function.
Battlearms Development ambi safety and takedown and pivot pins.
Very true. I think people are crazy that are spending crap metric tons of money on them. Since that post I too have seen them pop up for 19.99. If your still looking for one just be patient and I would also recommend email notifications.
