Lets talk Cans!!

So I am wanting to buy a can or 2. And since this job I have currently pays pretty well I will have a few dollars in my pocket to buy one or 2. Now I have been looking and doing some research and have somewhat zeroed in on 3 different manufacturers. Gemtech, OPS, SAS.

I was eyeing the G5 from Gemtech, and was wanting to get some opinions on the 3 manufacturers from end users of cans.

AAC, KAC, and SWR also have very good cans. I would defently include them in my search. I own AAC and Gemtech myself, and am partial to AAC due to my problems with my GT can.

I don’t know how you could have done research and not included AAC in your possible choices.

It’s hard to beat their durabillity and price. $585 for an M4-1000? Shit! I may very well pick up a second unit next week.

Your search will be fun…all the companies you mentioned make GREAT cans!!!
“Fast Attach” has always boggled me??? I’m not going to “Fast Attach” a can to a LOADED weapon…
What about the required high priced threaded or lugged flash hider who’s threads or lugs are always exposed
when the can in not mounted…do I now need a thread protector, like on all my handguns??
“Fast Attach” …doesn’t mean “Fast Detach” unless you pack a thermal glove. (which is smart to have)
That’s why I believe in just leaving the can on the weapon at all times.
I own maybe twenty dedicated sound suppressors, but for the M4 I really like
the AAC Omni and Gemtech Halo…I currently own four Halo’s and just luv them.
They mount to any of my M4’s…you do need to replace your crush washers with peel washers for the Halo to mount correctly.
I don’t think you can do wrong with either a Omni or Halo.

I didn’t think I wanted to pay for fast attach when I bought my first can. But the M4-1000 was quite affordable and, I wouldn’t buy a can any other way for the AR platform now that I’m used to Fast Attach.

I take my can on and off all the time when I’m shooting. If you’re firing sensibly, you can take the can off with a nomex glove.

Surefire, Ops, AAC, SWR, KAC, Gemtech, and YHM all make really good cans. Heard them, shot them.

I’ve never handled, or seen an SAS can personally. I understand they are decent, and priced well.

I assume this is for a 5.56 AR?? If so, you almost can’t go wrong with any of the ones listed above.

A YHM SS or AAC M4-1000 are superbly priced and sound good.

Also… I’d only buy from a stocking dealer. Even if that ment not getting my first choice in silencer.

We have a lot of peckerhead dealers in AZ who are glad to order anything you want… I don’t think so. Either be a dealer or don’t.

AAC M4-1000 exceeds the needs of 99.99% of the folks out there, and is priced right.

What I am looking for in a company is stellar QC and CS. I dont want to have to hound the shit out of a company is god forbid something goes wrong.

We have the Surefire 556K cans, and they have been perfect.

When we first obtained them, the Surefire rep installed an adapter on on rifle that actually had several imperfections to the crown, which caused some baffle strikes and some large groups. (It turned out, at SWAT School, the operator in quesion smacked this rifle’s muzzle several times on the ground – and later had it threaded for an A2 before the FH212 was installed. He just couldn’t figure out why his groups were so large – but that is a different story…)

The rep fixed the rifle and reinstalled the adapter, and Surefire replaced the cans – with their NO HASSLE, LIFETIME Guarantee.

Neighboring agencies appear to be happy with their Gemtech cans, too.

AAC would be your best bet from what I’ve seen here.

I wouldn’t buy anything from the Gemtards thanks to the Gemtax issue. If you check out the M4-2000 thread here… there’s a guy who had a bad round fark up his blast baffle and end cap. In the past AAC could have just replaced the can with a new one of the same serial number. But since the Gemtards pushed the issue, ATF no longer will allow this. This guy has to pay for a new $200 tax stamp or keep his damaged silencer.

I’m willing to be corrected if I’m wrong, but I think this all came about because AAC was rebuilding Gemtec’s silencers for people so they’d have a stronger can.

I think I am going to start with the AAC myself.

There are a lot of good manufacturers out there. I will say right up front that I am partial to AAC. They make a large range of products for your needs/budget and they have excellent CS. As for a dealer, find one with cans in stock as has been suggested above. It will save you time and bother.

I won’t give any business to Gemtech for the disservice they did to our entire community. I guess they are banking on this war lasting forever for their customer base.

Can’t speak to the others, but I own the SureFire FA556k with the BM556k.

It was pricey at $1,200, but was my first suppressor and I relied heavily on others and research:
-It came highly reccomended by Grant at G&R
-I have many SF products, all of which are top-notch
-Lifetime (no BS) Warranty - worth paying a little more for peace of mind
-Compact (adds 4.3" to the biz end of my SBR)
-Nominal (1/2MOA) POI shift, verified multiple times
-The Muzzle Break works great by itself (much faster (accurate) follow-up shots than vortex)
-I liked the lack of exposed threads/FA method (nothing to get messed up)
-The ratchet attach is a great feature

Oh yeah, and it knocks down the noise to the point that I don’t have to wear ear pro…although I have seen no attenuation claims, I suspect it it in the 30 db (dry)range - middle of the pack on noise reduction.

I ordered mine thru Grant…We were held hostage to a backlog at SureFire…took ~ 4months end to end (incl. ATF).

I understand that many manufacturers are having a hard time keeping up.

Save additional delay (beyond the Tax stamp BS) by buying one that is physically in stock at a dealer.

My first can took 131 days. I had my dealer order it. My stamp was at the dealer before the can was even made I think. The upside was as soon as the can arrived at the dealer, I got to pick it up.

I’m still waiting for my AAC M4-2000 '08. I sent in the paperwork about 7-8 weeks ago.

I have an ops 15, nice sturdy kit.
Not Qd but appears bulletproof.
I have heard Ops has good customer service as does ACC from reports.
I plan on getting an ops 14 as well soon.

While I do work for AAC, I also have tested all of the major cans out there (not counting newcomers like the SAS which is not on my radar yet). With everything I know, the top three choices are all made by AAC: The AAC M4-2000, SPR/M4, and M4-1000. Then also KAC, Surefire, and Ops are also very good and the KAC is the most used by the military and is the most well documented. Can’t think of any others I would consider.

You are always unbelievable. I know you still read TOS daily so go look at those “Gemtax” threads and pull your head…

If you can’t understand it, don’t mention it.

He knows who he wants to choose from and for what reasons. There are MANY reasons that could be brought up and he chose to bring none of them up but you had to…
