LEO vs CIV Ammo.

I have. Years ago I bought a box of Gold Dot 9mm. It was the “Short Barrel” version, which I don’t think they make anymore in 9mm. It came in a 20 or 25 round box. I also have four boxes of Gold Dot .38 sp +p 135gr. Those are in 20 round boxes as well. They’re downstairs and I don’t feel like going down and checking the round count, but I also have two boxes of Remington Golden Saber 180gr. hollow points in .40 S&W. They’re in 20 or 25 count boxes. I, personally, have never seen 50 round boxes of Golden Saber or Gold Dot pistol ammo in person. I’ve never even seen a box of Federal HST in person, but I’ve seen the old Hydra Shok in 20 or 25 round boxes.

At most of the gun stores and big box retailers here, most of the defensive handgun loadings I see are in 20 or 25 round boxes. Hornady Critical Defense, Remington Golden Saber, Winchester (?) PDX, all come in 20 or 25 round boxes. The only thing I see in 50 round boxes are the various Ranger loadings, and the Winchester white box hollow points.

really? My ammo locker is filled with 20 (25 for 9mm) rd boxes of brand name jacketed hollow point ammo. Go into any Cabelas or any store and look at the JHP type ammo from any of the manufacturers. It is almost all 20r with 25r for 9mm and smaller calibers.

I’ve never seen 50rd JHP type handgun ammo at any store (except maybe commercially reloaded). Only 50Rd handgun ammo I ever see are the FMJ/TMJ type rounds, or maybe for 44mag or similar stuff some soft points.

I’m sure it is out there somewhere in 50rd boxes but when I was buying 10mm ammo, it all came in 25rd boxes, regardless of mfgr. The more “exotic” a caliber, type, or class of ammo is, the more likely that that stocking gun shop is going to have it in smaller boxes; easier to buy fewer, easier to retail because the price per box is so much higher than say a box of 115gr ball 9mm.

Smaller boxes gives a small retailer the ability to stock a greater variety without having to overstock. That is the price one has to pay for having a stocking dealer, they may have it, but it costs more than buying in bulk online. Sometimes that convenience is well worth the money but that convenience comes at a cost.

I buy 9mm Gold Dots in 50 round boxes from GT Distributors in Austin, TX for about $23 a box, much cheaper than the 20-25 round boxes I used to buy at the LGS. I’m military but not LEO. I’ve never had them ask me for my ID so I guess they sell to anyone.

Same here, I have ALWAYS had to obtain 50 round boxes of defensive handgun ammunition online. No local retailers stock them, at guns shows they can be had at a premium price and usually small selection.

People need to remember very few gun store owners are shooters are really intrested in the shooting community. They are there to make money period dot. Many of the gun store owners I visited in Alabama when I was visiting before the last presidential election and they were hoping for another ban so they can retire.

Ammo I just buy online and if I need to defensive stuff real quick I just pay the price.

The dealer most likely has ZERO access to 50rd duty ammo.

Manufacturers like Winchester, Federal/Speer controls where the 50rd duty ammo goes. So your LGS can’t just pick up the phone and order it (FYI).

Even if you look online, there are VERY few places to get the good stuff (HST, etc). This should be a clue as to hard it is to get.

ditto… Only ever seen 20-25 rd SD ammo. Although for the first time since I joined this site (which is pretty long  JK) I saw .40 Ranger-T at Cabelas in Phoenix.

I have Bought all Of My Ranger-T (about 700 rds of it) from here He will sell you the stuff:D he also carries Many defense rounds in the 50 count boxes .

the Only thing you have to do is email him a copy of your DL to prove you are of legal Buying age.
He states that the Restricted ammo Might say it on the Box But that is what the Company puts on the Boxes and it does Not stop him as a Dealer to sell to the general Public .

if it is out of stock check back he is good about getting ammo back in stock in a timely Manner . His prices beat what i have seen at the Gun shows even with shipping and I always got My order in about 3 days .i hope this can help you

Quote from his Site"The ammo is restricted by Winchester to Law Enforcement sells only. This is Winchester rules not the law." SO By law as Long as you are of legal age and not a felon you are GTG

I was think it was over looked but this was the main point of this thread. It’s the manufactures making this ammo so scarce. If they can package millions of 25 round boxes, they can sell the 50 round boxes for a hair more to the general public. I shouldn’t need a badge to get quality ammo locally at a decent price.

Looks like I’ll be ordering online. Just one more reason LGS will be closing down sooner than later.

I am sure that your local gunshop will survive you not buying ammo from them, just like the other stores in the country are.

so very true i stopped By a LGS the other day and a Guy in a suit was paying 1200 for a DPMS and a Box of ammo(as he told his sidekick" I have to get one before they are banned")( I just Laugh and walked on out the door after the Sales clerk said it was a “Great Buy”:sarcastic:there is always a fool who don’t know any better and will lay out the cash.
the owner of the store had just passed away and i stopped in to Give my respect .
EDIT: for any who are in my area it was Mark from Marks outdoors he lost his fight with cancer

Most of this is going to be customer driven.

I have been standing at the gun counter when folks ask if they can buy less than the 50 or 20 round box “I only need six”, or “enuf to fill up my clip” is common for folks who don’t want to drop money on a full box of ammo.

Seriously, no bullshit.

Guys who buy by the case, or know shit about wound ballistics, are a very small minority of the shooting public.

So very true. On this forum we tend to get wrapped up in the idea that everyone thinks like this. Far from it.

Hey, many have failed. I don’t like it either. Seems growing up dad would take me around gun stores and they were plentiful. Good customer service, good deals, etc. It’s sad.

We are fans of the ATK line of ammo (SPEER and HST). We sell the LE 50rd boxes on our website if interested.

I noticed that and I’ll be placing an order this week.

Thanks!
