Since this ATF man-hating splittail bitch decided that a guy in Wisconsin needed to go to prison for owning an AR that doubles…even AFTER she had to order it retested using ammo with pistol primers (so the floating pin would occasionally slamfire, resulting in a double) …I was thinking that even with its durability issues, installing a titanium firing pin might be cheap insurance against this kind of assclownery.
good question
IIRC there was a lot more to the story than simple occasional double firing. You can also thank the politicians who will not address the lack of testing standards at the BATFE.
As I understand it, that case involved doubling due to hammer follow. Wouldn’t a lighter firing pin actually make that sort of double fire easier, since the hammer would expend less energy pushing the lighter FP forward?
I believe that this issue was discussed at length in the general disussion thread. This guy knowingly put M16 fire control parts in his lower (more than once I believe) and even when he knew it was malfunctioning he lent it to someone to take to the range.
Yup. :o
Not the best way to endear ourselves to the lady shooters, practitioners, etc of M4C…
Titanium firing pins aren’t the best consideration for this purpose, anyway. The Cowboy Shooters use them to put in their Marlin lever-actions and it has been found that they are softer than steel pins. Titanium is lighter than steel and may increase your lock time, but will round off after about a thousand rounds.
Do we have a case where someone got into hot water with a malfunctioning semi auto rifle/handgun that didn’t have full auto parts packed in it?
