Least Powerful Round

I need some advice specific to the 6920.

My 8 year old son has been shooting 22lr on a bolt action rifle, he wants to shoot the 6920. Because of his internal medical device for the leukemia treatment…

I’m looking for the least powerful round that the 6920 can handle.

I’m not looking for a 22lr conversion kit and he only shoots out to 100yards.

probably your best bet is to hand load for it.
the muzzle blast is pretty much the worst thing about shooting an AR15 in my opinion. recoil is quite light…
what exactly is the issue with the medical device? perhaps a heavy shooting jacket would stop any recoil from the AR.

wolf ammo is underpowered also and cheap

We don’t want to jar it out of position, he’s a right handed shooter and the port is on his left side.

Smuck, best of luck to you and your little guy.

I would try out any flavor of Remington UMC ammo. For shits and giggles I shot a box of the 45 grain hollow points from my 6921 and it ran fine.

The weight of the gun typically wears on them more than the recoil impulse. If you could bench/bag the gun with some UMC or other anemic .233 round, the recoil should not be an issue.

Take care of him. Smiles work wonders on sick kids. Some trigger time on dads AR will put a grin on his face for days.

PMC bronze and UMC are the wimp rounds to get.

The thing that made the AR shootable for my rimfire son was a silencer. Reduces sound and recoil.

Setting up a jug of water for him to obliterate with a hollow point 55gr helped too!

Do you load your own? I down load .223 ammo for my son to shoot and they are reliable in my rifle.

By your description, his port is on the support side, right? No direct contact, no direct recoil impulse. Port should be fine.

I’ll echo others on the UMC, PMC, and Wolf as lightest.

Muzzle bake? Some of them are very efficient at reducing recoil.

I don’t load my own, I wish that I did, we went through a little over 5,000 rounds in the past 14 months.

I’ll pick up some UMC and give that a try.

Thanks for the help.

Probably Wolf, or some .223 40gr varmint loads.

No issues with a 40 gr in a 1/7?

If he is shooting from the bench you could try a recoil reducing rest.

I shot some of the PMC stuff recently and got an average velocity of around 2700fps.

I shot the 45 grain out of my 1/7 with low expectations. I had no trouble hitting my target (empty 1 lb propane bottle) at 50 yards.

This stuff is pretty mild.
