I was just wondering if anyone else has seen this. I recently bought some brass online. It is LC 68 Match 30-06. The site said it was never fired (pull down). It hasn’t been fired, the primer pockets are clean. However, there is a dark grey film inside all the case necks. The stuff just doesn’t want to come out. The only thing I have found that halfway works is to soak the cases and scrub with a case neck brush. Has anyone else gotten any cases like this? If so, how did you get them clean?
Hey there,I saw this a few days ago and forgot to get back at ya !!! I don’t have any of this brass, but I bet it is Sealant from the original loading !!! I’m sure it won’t hurt anything if ya left it,but if ya want to clean it up good, thats no big deal either !!! I would tumble them up and get to loading them !!
Thanks M1A_ Scoutguy but I don’t think this is a sealant. It goes all the way in the neck where the bullet was. I tried to tumble … no effect. I tried my ultrasonic … no real effect. The only way I have found to get this stuff off is to soak the necks in kerosene for a few minutes and hit them with a bronze brush. This stuff is HARD when dry. I tried to load a few without cleaning and the extra thickness of the grey crud made a noticable bulge on the outside of the case.
Hmmm, that is weird, wonder what the heck it is ??? Sealant seems like the logical answer, but must be its something else !! Maybe ask the place that ya bought them from, they mite know !! Get a pair of gloves and hit a few with a hair dryer, maybe it will wipe out when it gets warm ! I don’t like the ideal that it bulges the case, yike’s !!! Let me know if the “heat” works.
