LBT 6094 Kangaroo Insert with kydex insert?

6094 on the way, trying to work out a solution to running 3 mags in the kangaroo open top style. I love the draw on the KYWI’s and wished there was an easy way to mate the two. I have found a few solutions and am looking for first hand experiences with them. One option is the S&S Gear Retention Track https://www.sandsprecision.com/gear-retention-tracktm-kangaroo-kit.html. Another option is the Ferro Concepts Kydex Triple Shingle http://ferroconcepts.com/collections/rifle/products/fc-m4-kts-kydex-triple-shingle . The third option would be trying to hand roll something like KYWI inserts into a traditional LBT 3 mag insert. In researching this, I came across this old thread about cutting down KYWI’s to fit a Mayflower Insert https://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?94958-Poly-Kydex-M4-magazine-quot-Kangaroo-quot-pouch-inserts .

6094 is on the way to replace my old CIRAS SWAT vest. I love the retention on the Esstac Kywi, it seems to be that perfect balance. I have zero experience with the other options.

I have the Mayflower APC with the kangaroo pouch. I took out the bungees and put 3 KYWI inserts. It worked very well. I imagine it would work with the LBT as well.

SoTex-
You may want to pass on the Ferro insert. Friend of mine had one, it is VERY difficult to draw the mags from, and the hypalon-whatever-ish stuff it’s lined with doesn’t seem to wear well.

A good alternate would be the GMR kydex insert, much better draw (and almost 1/2 what the S&S costs).

Also, the Tyr tactical “happy mag” triple kydex insert may be worth looking into- I would contact them to ensure it fits, but I’d bet it will.

I’ve been thinking about getting the kiwis for my 6094/kangaroo pouch. I have to really slam my pmags in to the kangaroo pouch.

For anyone interested in a similar solution, I ended up picking up a TYR insert used from a guy on another board. Its very similar to the PIG insert or the one TYR is making now, but I presume is an older version. It uses the happy mag KYWI style insert in three separate mag sleeves. There is also a portion of velcro around the bottom of each KYWI insert that will allow you to adjust the ride height of the insert in the event you want your mags to ride very high or very low in the kangaroo. In addition to the KYWI, there is also removable bungee retention.

Just hit the door, so I have limited use currently and don’t want to comment one way or the other as to it being a good solution to my problem.

I went with this over the KYWI as the feedback I got was mixed, some say they are fairly plug and play, some say they required extensive modification to get to cooperate. I did not go with the S&S deal due to some issues with retention on other users, as well as the appearance of being bulky. I don’t have measurements, but it “seems” that it would add more thickness than a KYWI type setup. Slim is good. Not a knock on the S&S product by any means, as I still haven’t seen one in person much less run one, just an observation.

I really like that TYR pouch, might need to pick one up for my APC. Any problems you’ve seen with it now that you’ve had it for a little while OP?

I have a similar need, only I’m trying to find inserts for AK 7.62X39 mags. I use a LBT 6094 also.

Just to update, been running it for a while now with good results. I don’t typically use the bungees as the retention is solid but not so much that I have to fight to get it out. At least for me, it’s pretty ideal retention wise. I run a blue force ten speed over the top of it and that allows me a ton of flexibility. I usually run limited additional mags depending on what we’re doing but the setup allows me to plus my mags up or provides temporary storage of other items. Good stuff.
