LAS VEGAS – William Burhoe was working the graveyard shift at the Supermart on Smoke Ranch and Rainbow when an armed suspect walked in and shot him. The 77-year-old fought back, killing the suspect. Burohe died a short time later.
Burhoe worked at the store on and off for three years. He liked to have some extra money to gamble on the horse races, but his wife says it was the friendships he made that kept him coming back.
“I saw the word ‘Coroner’ and I said, 'No, no. This can’t be true. This can’t be happening,” said Bill’s wife Christine Burhoe.
Burhoe never had the chance to say goodbye. The shooting took her husband of 16 years.
“He liked to work there because of the people that would come in – the comradery with the people,” she said.
Late Saturday night, his graveyard shift came to a tragic end. Christine Burhoe says a suspect entered the store, tried to purchase some beer, but left without his drink, only to come back minutes later with a gun.
The suspect shot Burhoe in the chest, but he fought back. He managed to grab the store gun and fire some rounds, shooting and killing the suspect.
“They shot my husband over a bottle or can of beer,” she said. “I know this sounds awful morbid, but I’m glad that my husband fought back. Nobody deserves to go through that. Nobody.”
Ms. Burhoe says her husband was a former military police officer, served in the Marine Corps, and was an avid hunter. He also always gave help to those who came to his store a little short.
“My husband would have taken the money out of his pocket and paid for it, which he has done plenty of times down there,” she said.
There were two customers inside of the store during the shooting. Some say Burhoe probably saved their lives.
Police have not identified the suspect.
This makes me angry. There’s some real pieces of shit in this town.
