LaRue PredatAR barrel swap??

If I were to buy and burn up LaRue’s stainless barrel, could I then replace it with another companies barrel? Are the barrel’s universal? Would another barrel throw off the balance of the gun?
I do not see weights listed on different companies barrels.

I seem to recall that the OBR has a proprietary barrel extension. Not sure whether that applies to the PredatAR as well - if so, I imagine you would need to send it back to LaRue to be rebarreled.

Do you really expect to shoot out the bbl? I ask because most people don’t ever come close. I have no idea what your background is, or how much you shoot in a year.

FWIW, back in November I watched Pat McNamara shoot a sub moa target with a LaRue rifle that he said had over 18,000 rounds through it. His was a Stealth which has a thicker bbl profile but the same stainless rifling.

As for being proprietary, I know the PredatAR has HK style flutes as part of the Xtraction feature. Don’t know that you couldn’t use a traditional bbl though. Why not call LaRue?

ETA: LaRue AR’s don’t have M4 ramps on the upper receiver.

LaRue claims their barrels have a life of 10,000 rounds.

Barrel life can vary due to shooting schedule.

In any case, I’d call LaRue and ask about rebarrel options for the PredatAR and see what they say. I’m curious as to whether or not the barrel extension is specific. That said, the accuracy potential and low weight of the pencil profile stainless barrel is one of the appealing features of the PredatAR - not to mention the proprietary XTRAXN chamber. Why swap in something else?

I think you are concerned about nothing. We discussed this before when the subject of “disposable” parts came up.

If you are concerned about shooting out the barrel get a standard AR which is much easier to swap out and the barrel will be much cheaper.

If you can afford to shoot out a barrel, then you can afford to change the barrel, whether it’s propietary or not.

Exactly, how much is 10k rounds of match ammo going to cost you?

touche

At $51.95 for a box of 50: $10,390.

I couldn’t care less about burnout - but have been considering going the barrel blank route to have a 6.5CM or .260R OBR set up for suppressed use. I know I’ve seen pictures somewhere of custom rebarrels out there using Liljas in 6.5mm, but not sure where.

If you’re in the same caliber, use the existing or upcoming LT solution, it’ll save you tons of money and headache.

Even if he was throwing Wolf through it at $.22/round, it still comes out to more than the entire rifle costs at $2200. That’s not including shipping or tax. So it would be something more like ~$2600.

Hmm thats a good Q I have one of these too, post your findings…thx

A LOT of people seem to be buying these expecting/wanting to use them as blasting guns that also have a higher degree of accuracy at distance. I get emails once a month or more from people asking me what I think of the gun, and if it’s finally the holy grail of light weight for a short range blaster and better accuracy at distance. The thing is I don’t know as I’ve only got 20+/- rounds on one myself.

I think that most people would be shocked at just how accurate a “4150” chrome-lined barrel can be with good ammo, and if they’re never going to feed it good ammo I’m not sure I see the point of buying the Larue.

I say that to say that for a guy trying to buy a blasting gun with a high degree of potential accuracy, he could hit that round count in half or even 1/4 the cost of what you posted.

I could be wrong but I was under the impression if someone shot out a barrel that LaRue will replace it at no charge.

I’ve been wondering about the same thing as I really like everything about the PredatAr except the LW SS Barrel. They need to offer some options. I see there is a select fire PredatAR with 14.5" OBR Barrel, if they’d offer that upper with pinned A2X and Semi lower I’d be all over it like flies on shit!

PredtOBR or OBR Hybrid is coming. Check out the Costa Ludis carbine that was developed in conjunction with Larue. PredatAR upper/rail, OBR 14.5" barrel with Surefire break/FH pinned and welded, and in FDE. Also Larue will produce the PredatOBR/OBR Hybrid in varying lengths outside of the Costa edition.

I called and spoke with LaRue concerning this topic. I was. Told to call back after SHOT ended and speak with a certain person to get a 100% definite answer.

The gentleman I spoke with said a couple things.
First, the rifle’s barrel should be able to be replaced with another mil spec barrel from another manufacture but will need a gunsmith to install.
Second, the gentleman does not understand why LaRue has placed the claim of a 10,000 round life expectancy of the PredatAR barrel. He sited that they have many rifles overseas well within 30,000 down the pipe with claims of great accuracy being maintained.
He did say that a suppressor was a no go for the PredatAR barrel as it is now but a new PredatAR was introduced this morning with a OBR barrel and that will retail for $1,995.

That’s good news & made the decision of how to spend my ITR easy. I’m going to order the Costa Edition:)

I wonder what sort of premium that comes with?
