Hi I got my 20 inch Stealth upper in today. I have a Larue billet lower on order too but I decided to put another lower I had together for now so I could show it off.
LAR lower receiver, Geissele Trigger, Magpul stock and pistol grip. Larue mount with Bushnell Eliete 6500 2.5-16 power. I have not shot it yet and the Troy sights are on the way. I have not decided which rail covers to use yet.
Very nice, I am waiting on my new lower to come in so I can do something very similar. I m tired of 16" and shorter rifles (Of course thats because I have a 16" LMT allready.) But I have been wanting something to fill the void between my fighting rifle and my 1000 yard bolt gun. You also cemented my choise of 20" versus 24". Great looking rifle.
I also see that the stereotypical TOS trouble shooting team is hard at work (you are stupid and just put more oil on it).
So let’s look at some things. From reading your post, you are using Hornady 556 NATO pressured ammo (T2 I am assuming). This ammo has plenty of pressure so that is not the issue.
I am also guessing that you have put one round into the weapon and fired it to see if the bolt locks back?
Since LT does not pin the GB on the gun, the first thing I would do is to see if the alignment is off. You can get a good idea by looking at the GB’s position inside the rail. Is it leaning to one side? Is the GB pushed all the way back against the shoulder?
Next, look at the gas key. Staked properly and not loose? Does it appear that the key is sitting squarely on the carrier?
Next, measure the buffer spring and make sure it is too spec. Is the buffer spring SS or CS?
Last couple trouble shooting techniques to narrow down the cause. Take the BCG out and run it in another gun. Then take a KNOWN good BCG and run it in the LT upper and see what you get.
Just to stir the pot. I’d like to know how the F-ck does LaRue know you voted for Obama. Because they just gave it to you good and got you for 1200 to boot.
I just read the thread on TOS. Boy ML seems a little touchy today. I have no issue with him telling you to “lube it” and the people I was talking about were all the little LT kool aid drinkers that know about as much on troubleshooting an AR as my dog! ML just automatically ASSumes that my comments are directed at him.
Also my comments concerning the fact that LT does NOT stake their GB was said SPECIFICALLY as they can shift if they are hit hard enough (known fact). I also brought up the BCG questions as these can be the main reason for your issues (not because they made the BCG). I did read in a thread on TOS though that they let out a batch of un-staked gas keys and is why I brought it up (nothing more).
Anyone that fixes broken AR’s and helps people on the net on a dailey basis knows that GB’s that are off center or a gas key that is loose are all too common and need to be looked at (as this is the cause of a lot of problems).
We are a certified armorer and have written/contributed to major AR manufacturer’s armorers manuals that are being taught today. Ken Hackathorn refers to us as one of the best AR builders in the country and is who he comes to when he needs an AR built. Think Ken H. would let someone that is “clueless” build his weapons?
We build AR’s for troops in the sandbox, Contract Shooters, SWAT and the average Joe. To say we don’t know what we are doing is truly retarded.
Oil (as Mr. LaRue brought up) is of course a good thing. With that said, an AR will run BONE DRY for about 50-100rds! LT being the good little AR builder that they are, shipped the weapon with a lubed bolt. So adding MORE lube is NOT going to fix the short stroking issue.
From looking at your pics, it does NOT appear that the GB is canted enough to cause any issues (the GB position actually look more than satisfactory). The other question I asked was if the GB was pushed all the way back against the shoulder? Please take a look at this.
Also measure the the buffer spring and let me know if it is SS or CS (this is a bit of stretch, but you never know).
Shooting the weapon with a KNOWN good BCG will also tell us a lot about where the issue maybe.
Grant,
I don’t mean to hijack a thread but I found the info about the LaRue Stealth upper (BCG and LaRue not pinning the gas block) interesting and I would like to ask you if there is anything I should be looking for with my Daniel Defense SPR upper?
I can’t see the gas block well inside the rail, to your knowledge does DD pin the GB and what are their BCGs like?
GB’s that are rocksetted in place with a dimpled barrel (and burried inside of a rail) are VERY secure. GB’s that are outside of the rail are much easier to get bumped and shift. This is what happened to the early SPR’s and CRANE had to recall them as they came loose.
The DD BCG that comes with their new M4 is fantastic and built properly (HP/MP’d).
Ok I got the new upper in today from Larue. I went to the range with it, the old upper and a carbine lower and of course the rifle lower. The new upper ran like a champ with the rifle lower. The old one still did not even after the oil bath. The old upper did however run like a champ on my Colt 6920 lower. It never missed a beat. So my original theory was right and Larue did nothing wrong in building the upper. I just simple got the wrong one sent to me. They made good and I am out no money. I am really happy with the guys at Larue. Way to go guys. I am shipping the old upper back in the morning. Although a friend of mine would love to buy it for his carbine.
Thanks again to Mark and Austin you guys are top notch. Thanks Grant as well. You won’t believe it but this baby shot a 3 shot .5 moa group with Federal x193 ball ammo.
You sir have the rifle I hope to build next. I’m sitting on a Build Lower with an A2 stock. I want to make a Longer range target rifle out of it. I’m looking for a 24inch HBAR. I expect the rifle will be a bit heavy, but should be a tack driver if it works the way I want.
Glad to see you got your rifle running well! It looks very nice, and .5MOA with XM193! Wow, I’d like to see what it’d do with some TAP or Gold Medal.
And WOW Grant! I didn’t realize that Larue was such a fan of yours! Talk about not reading a post well, I don’t think there was a sentence of yours that he didn’t seemingly misconstrue. At least he didn’t get personal with his posts!
Everyone knows that LaRue makes good stuff, but for god sake he is more of a drama Queen than a 13 year old girl. All you need to see to prove this is his industry forum on TOS. He is currently feuding with At least 3 other industry leaders including Noveske, MI, and ACC, and he does it in a whiney little girl fashion. I have had a chance to mess with his stuff a little bit and it seems to be as good as everyone says, but I would rather deal with Daniel Defense than buy something from such a crybaby.
Also see the drama over the BCG that he is currently bitching about.
