Krink SBR, SLR106UR vs SLR104UR

Illinois just passed a law at the beginning of the year allowing SBR’s. I talked to my CLEO, and he’s more than willing. My C&R application went in the mail today. Once I get that back I’m pursuing the host, and sending off the form 1.

My question is the host weapon. I want a krinkov with a side folding stock. Not sure what direction to go though.

SLR104UR : Couldn’t get much simpler. Cut and crown barrel when the tax stamp comes in. 5.45x39 is the original caliber. I have no idea on the ballistics out of an 8" barrel. Good defensive ammo is sparse, basically limited to an “ok” Hornady round.

SLR106UR pistol: Already has a correct short barrel. Also has correct trunions already installed. Just needs the holes put in the receiver and hardware for stock latch and side folding catch installed along with a ak 100 series stock. However, I know 5.56mm suffers in a barrel below 10". I also already own a slr106fr, so mags and ammo interchange.

Either could be test fired, and enjoyed while waiting on the stamp. I only have 2 calibers at the moment ( 9mm and 5.56mm) I’d rather not add another caliber to the buy list, but if 5.45 performs better???..So, for those who have been down this route on a krink, what did you do, what would you do?

Hard call these days.

You already have 5.56 mags so normally that is what makes me recommend 5.45, mags are more available.

Ammo USED to be a no brainer until a bunch of dickheads made 5.45 pistols and made sure ATF found out about it. I still think we have a few more years of 5.45 still being cheaper than 5.56 regardless.

All that considered I’d still say SLR104UR because it will involve less gunsmithing and is the more correct Krinkov. Arsenal has a track record of issues with their 5.56 AK rifles.

Thanks for the reply Steyr.

It’s funny, I had planned to really stock up on 5.45 this summer ( when I say stock up, I mean stacks) and was blind sided by the 7n6 crap. I only had a couple thousand rounds, and felt like I missed the train.

The slr 106 I have already has ate everything I’ve thrown at it including Winchester Powerpoints. It kind of surprised me considering the bad rap they have. Then again I only use ((10)) mags.

Regardless, I’m not set on 5.56 and I do know there’s still 7n6 out there, albeit not at $159 per 1080, and commercial ammo is decently cheap too when compared to 5.56.

I’m still having a hard time justifying another caliber guys. To ease “gunsmithing” they do make a rifle version of the slr106ur.

I also have plans for a 11.5" BCM carbine as well.

I’d go 5.56.

5.45 isn’t available in cheap surplus anymore unfortunately (but that now normal priced 5.45 surplus is still corrosive).

You already have 5.56x45 and 5.56 mags for an AK. I’d say keep it simple and go 5.56.

If 5.45 was still cheap I’d be buying a 5.45 8"-10.5" upper for my SBR. Because that was cheap ammo. That’s just my $.02

ETA: I have a 12.5" BCM and my Dad has an 11.5". I strongly recommend their SBR’s.

Surprisingly, mine came with an H2 from G&R. But it extracts and ejects steel cased fine with both an H and H2 buffer.

I’m happy.

Yes, the days of $159 1080 tins is gone. The price of the surplus isn’t far behind commercial, and commercial 5.45 isn’t far behind .223/5.56.

I’m a big fan of BCM. I’m glad to hear great feedback on their stuff.

My other concern is 5.56mm out of a 8" barrel. If I went the 5.56 krink route, would it be wise to cut and crown at 10"? A krink booster should easily cover the extra 2".

That’s the downside.

5.45x39mm is a sickle shaped bullet that tumbles. 5.56x45mm relies on velocity (in most projectiles) to fragment at the cannelure.

That being said, there are bullets like the Federal Fusion and Barnes TSX that aren’t as reliant on velocity to be effective.

You’re going to have to figure out what 5.56mm load you like out of SBRs anyway when you get your BCM.

This is a great thread that was shared with me.

Hope this helps.

My SLR-106UR and SLR-106CR were absolutely unreliable junk. Arsenal, NV couldn’t fix them after several attempts. To top it off, their customer service is absolutely the worst of any gun company that I’ve dealt with (don’t read between the lines, I’ve dealt with a good number of them). If you do decide to go with an Arsenal, make sure that it will run 100% prior to submitting your Form 1.

I have both the 106UR and 106CR. Have had them for several years now. Both are sbr rifles and have been very reliable since day one.

Now I recently sold a pristine Bulgarian krink kit with original barrel for a lot of money to fund a AUG A3.

The overall ammo situation with 5.45 is what helped me decide to not build the 5.45 krink.
Have numerous things that shoot 5.56, both AR15s and AK rifles.
