Knight's Armament SR-15 or SCAR 17

Which would you rather have? In the market for one of the two and can’t decide.

I have no experience with the SCAR, so I can’t judge based on that, but I do have an SR-15 Mod 2. I’ve only had it for a week so I can’t give you an extended review, but I’ve shot KAC rifles in the past and they’re a joy to shoot. Not sure how fast you’ll make your purchase, but I’m going to run the Mod 2 through a local carbine match in a few weeks and I’ll let you know my overall impressions after that. Everyone is different, but one thing I know for sure is that I prefer the manual of arms of the AR family of weapons over all others. Different strokes for different folks, and there are plenty of happy SCAR owners to testify.

Good luck.

For what it’s worth, my favorite rifle is my Scar 17. Just shoots that .308 so damn well and with minimal recoil… it’s quite an experience that really isn’t touched by any other gun I’ve shot. Although I do have a Geissele trigger in it, I have zero complaints about the rifle.

I used to own a BCM AR15, and was eyeing the KAC SR15 Mod 2 hard… but just a few minutes ago, I pulled the trigger on a HK MR556 instead. I may still get the SR15 later this year, but I’m just such a piston guy and tend to favor military rifles for the history. And well… KAC seems to release a new Mod or update every 2 years or so… I’m sorta expecting the Mod 3 to have a more significant update, and I’m not 100% sold on Keymod winning out over the M-Lok.

If I could only have one AR, it would be a SR15. If I could only have one rifle, it would be a SCAR 17.

What is the purpose/mission of the rifle going to be? Might be easier to figure out what best suits the needs. Both are good rifles, well thought of, and proven. Both have their quirks as well.

Nothing too specific… Mainly just a fun, accurate, smooth weapon. For SR-15 I was looking at a 2.5-10x power optic, for SCAR I’d be looking at an Elcan 1.5-6x. (Though I’d be shooting with irons for quite some time before purchasing any optic)

Currently own a Colt 6920 but would sell in order to purchase either. I can’t afford to have a bunch of firearms so I would like one or two top of the line ones.

Edit: I feel like eventually I will own both the SR-15 and SCAR (hopefully…) but not sure which to get first.

SR25 ECC 16". All day.

This would be the best of the best IMO, but between the 2 you mentioned I would go with the SR15. I stockpile 5.56 cause 7.62 is harder for for me to gather up billions of rounds…haha.

KAC dimples are pretty damned awesome, maybe this will be your last chance to get the dimpled ECC. I have a 14.5 and I’m glad I jumped on the chance to own one.

I think you need to figure out what the purpose of the rifle is going to be, comparing the two is kind of apples and oranges. I think most would agree each of them is the best at what they do.

What rifles do you already own? What is the intended purpose of the rifle? .308 serves more of a mid range precision role, so feeding it match ammo would be pricey and as light as a SCAR 17s it is still not SR-15 light.

Without more information, my pick would be 11.5" SR-15 and a good can.

I was just planning on selling my Colt 6920 with some upgrades and would be able to buy a SR-15 or add a few dollars and get the SCAR.

In this price range I usually always recommend either the HK or KAC rifles. Others tend to like LMT / LaRued / etc…

In my hands, my SCAR is a pretty distant second to the two above, but that all depends on your primary use case.

Hopefully you realize you are comparing 556 with 762.

Good luck.

5.56 vs 308

That’s all this comes down to.

Exactly, its like asking which one you would rather have a BMW M3 or a Ford Raptor, two completely different animals, and the answer is that both are amazing in their own way.

Raptor. Beemers go to shitland after 5-6 years.

Your right, and I’ve seen fords break with less than a thousand miles on them because they couldn’t take sand dunes outside of 29 stumps. The point is,“its all relative” (quoted from Einstein or Tommy Chong)

I was a little out of line for shooting off topic.

OP, what’s your purpose for the rifle? These really are two different animals.

Get the SR-15. It is going to be good to go right out of the box, plus you probably already have some support gear for 5.56.

If you go with the SCAR, you are already going to need to spend $350+ for a Gisselle trigger to get to the level of the SR15 (granted it might be a bit better) then add mags and ammo.

As I’ve said several times before, I like the SCAR 17 so much I bought a second one. Besides being a great rifle it just happens to fit my intended purposes perfectly. For others it might not work. If you decide to get one make sure you budget for a Geissele SuperScar trigger before you get an optic.

I’d like to see the M3 in the dunes, talk about funny. But it is true, you rarely see older BMWs. Great cars that have short life spans.
