Anyone here use either of these? Your opinion of them?
I have the corkscrew one and have found it very effective for scraping carbon. No problems I’ve found in use. I’ve owned it for several years, but only use it on a bolt when I see visible carbon accumulation.
The top one looks to be a rebranded “Cat M4” tool. So, you may want to do some research using that product name. It’s been around a while, and there are no shortage of reviews, threads and discussions.
While it’s not precisely one of the two pictured, I do use something very similar.
I really like it. It’s effective and versatile. It definitely makes it easier to get rid of the carbon fouling. At under $20, it’s worth every penny.
I’ll echo his sentiment, i have the real avid one as well, and use it every time I clean mine up. Some of “features” on it are useless, but the bolt scraper and a couple others are great. Definitely worth it though.
I don’t understand the need when I have these. To each his own but I can clean and oil just about any gun in 7min or less without the fancy tools. But if it makes you happy rock on.

Didn’t ask about using brake cleaner.
I’ll second the Real Avid scraper… I’ve had the Cat tool and the Otis Bone… like the real avid best.

And I’ll give a third shout out to it!
You put it over the top. That damn Amazon one-click. ![]()
Lol. I’d recommend reading the next two sentences in a cheesy infomercial voice…
You want to know what’s even easier than buying something with Amazon one-click? Annihilating carbon with your brand new Real Avid Scraper!
After your excellent recommendation on those 2 Unique roll pin starters, I’m happy to have finally played a role in returning the favor.
I find I spend a lot of money based on guy’s recommendations. However I’ll correct your infomercial:
You want to know what’s hard about buying something with Amazon one-click? Finding another item to make the $25.00 free shipping.
You don’t have Prime??? Or, has Prime switched to free shipping for only orders over $25? I guess I rarely spend less than that. Which might be a problem…
Nope I don’t. Wife thinks I’ll go crazier, she says 1-click is bad enough. Anyways it turns out that the over 25.00 free shipping was a bait and switch for us poor country boys that don’t know no better and are too dumb to redo their one-click orders.
First, I have both Kley-Zion bolt scrapers. I have two of the cork-screw types and one of the squeeze types. The cork screw works best for heavy carbon but does not scrape to the finish so you have to use a little elbow grease to get the thin carbon off. The other scraper works well but you can damage the coating. YMMV
Bottom line they work fine, but may or may not be necessary. I don’t feel its necessary to get every bit of carbon off, and I only scrape the inside of the carrier occasionally. I think too much heavy cleaning can actually be a bad thing.
You want to get Prime because of the free shipping and many free movies, it absolutely pays for itself. You can extend the Prime free shipping to family members too.
- You already followed some good advice and picked up the Real Avid tool. Don’t pass up some even better advice on Prime

Scott’s absolutely correct that it pays for itself. The free movies and music are a nice bonus. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched 13 Hours since it was released on Prime. I even think there are audiobooks now that you get with the membership. But, more than anything, the free shipping makes it worth it. Two days, at your door, shipped free, even on Sundays.
Amazon has everything. I’m sure there are things your wife buys from them. So, just make it seem like her idea. Honestly, do what I did. Right before the holidays, sign up for the free trial. With all the little last minute stuff that inevitably pops up. Not having to fight the crowds, being able to order stuff up until the last minute, getting it shipped on time and for free is the only selling point you’ll need to keep the membership.
Just cleaned a bcg up yesterday. Wish I had read this thread earlier! Ordered a real avid for next time.
What’s nice about the Real Avid is that the portion you use to clean the bolt tail has just enough flex that you can press it inward slightly to make a tighter fit on the tail. You can’t beat it for the price.
I was trying to think of how to phrase this ^^^^
Well put. Even the portion that inserts into the carrier (where the bolt rides) is similar. The way I’d describe it is that you can torque or cant the tool while twisting to make contact with the interior of the carrier. Once a person has one of these, these “features” become pretty self evident.
