Kifaru Question

So with my birthday coming up I am wondering what my lovely bride will get me. Of course she is being mean to me and won’t give me a hint. However I have agents in place. They are ‘The Lawyer’ (age 12) and ‘Dr. Evil Jr.’ (age 10). They have been doing their best to get me some useful intel and not just updates as to what is going on with I Carley on Nick. One of the updates is that allegedly the warden was thinking about buying / has bought a Kifaru MMR. ‘The Lawyer’ forwarded to me the URL that ‘She Who Shall Be Obeyed’ was at. She was looking at the Kifaru “kits that people ordered but didn’t pay for so we now are trying to dump this stuff and make a little change with out taking it in the shorts” page.

With that in mind, I realize that if she bought anything she bought a G1 MMR. Having read the Kifaru page I am still trying to understand the changes between the G1 and G2 line. Basically since I will not be running around the boonies looking for bad guys (those days are behind me) and will instead be just plain old civilian back packing, will the changes make that much of a difference, or should I insist that if she gets me any gear that it must be new G2 equipment?

be wary my son, “the warden” is female, and thus predisposed to evil. This all may be an elaborate plan to throw to throw you off the scent of what the true prize is.

Well that goes with out saying. After all she is female and has evil girly parts that she will use to her own advantage with no more remorse than an attorney suing a little old lady for her last dime, but that is besides the point.

For my needs I am wondering if the difference between the G1 and G2 Kirafu gear is really all that great? In other words, will my back and hips be ok with the the G1.

I don’t have enough experience with both generations to give too much insight here, but just considering the question it seems to me that Kifaru’s reputation was built largely on their G1 gear, and I don’t remember everyone complaining that it all sucked back then!

No, I think a G1 MMR would still be an excellent pack. I am more familiar with their smaller packs so can’t give anything but general thoughts on the subject, unfortunately.

I have a G1 MMR and its great. You can put more weight in it than you’d want to carry.

Haven’t checked their site in a while bit I believe the G2 was made to better wear over body armor.

this post on the kifaru forum outlines the new features for G2 and differences between the G1 and G2 products:

Thanks for the update. That was what I was looking for.

I’d recommend going G2 MMR over G1. The upgrades are worth it. I own a G2 MMR and have spoke in detail via email and in person with Mel. From my experiences with the G2, the new duplex frame is a must have. The loops that were added make it COMPLETELY modular allowing the use of various pods and pockets to adjust the size of your load, especially if the MMR bag will be too large for what you’re going to be doing. The large “rubbery” material they’ve added to the lumbar pad really helps to keep the pack from sliding around, especially if used in combination with their clothing which has corresponding material to “lock” the pack in place once the waist belt is cinched down. The G2 method to take the bag off the frame also makes it so much easier than the old method of “attachment.” Kifaru has also made it possible to get a larger bag if you get the MMR. I forget exactly which bag it is, but one of the AG bags can be used on the MMR duplex frame to give you more CI’s than the MMR bag. If anything, I recommend getting the G2 duplex frame due to it’s flexibility if you’re hesitant on getting the MMR frame and bag.

Well…um…based on the input here I decided that the G2 would be what I need if for no other reason than the fact that my back aint what it used to be and I need all the help I can get in that department.

But she already pulled the trigger and ordered it. So looks like I will have to live with the G1. If it doesnt work out there is always fleabay I guess.
