KBI PRE-BAN Hungarian AKM?

This was the sporter model with what I believe, used to be a thumb hole stock but was cut up. The gun looks brand new with box and papers from KBI stating it was the LAST one the shipped with the New Clinton ban going into effect in '94. What would this be worth?
Thanks.

What do you mean by “cut up”.

The only preban Hungarian AKM’s were the 7000 SA-85M’s imported by KBI’s predecessor, Kassnar in 1985/86, 4K of which were underfolders, 3K were fixed stock.

Anything imported after the import ban of 1989 is a post ban.

I could be wrong as I am looking at digital pictures, but the stock looks like it used to be one of those silly thumb stocks, but if it was cut, it was done well and refinished, so it could be just an odd looking stock and not cut.

There are two letters from KBI stating it is the last one sold, listing serial numbers, but I cannot make out the numbers as the closer I get, it is illegible.

Does this help?

Pics would help dramatically.

A lot of people cut the thumbholes.

Once something is modified like that though, it destroys any “collectability”, and a certificate is basically worthless.

Post pics of the rifle, and pics of the certificate.

Sounds like a post-89, pre-94 import. The importer name, KBI, was used post-89 while Kassnar Imports was used pre-89. If the gun no longer has the thumbhole stock then you must be sure it is 922R compliant (has the correct amount of U.S./Import parts). Below is a link, make good use of it:

Post 89 Sporter import.

Do the 922r thing and return it to correct “pre ban” configuration and it will be worth around a grand. Hungarians were extremely well made.

SteyrAUG is spot on about these being of high-quality. They are built like tanks and are some of the best stamped rifles ever imported. I’d have to disagree on the value though. Even after de-banning, it would be hard to get $1k for a KBI marked gun. Kassnar is a whole other story, you’d be hard pressed to get an original for less than $1k. Just my .02.

There is still a bit of AK/Obama hysteria going on. $1,000 is probably the high end but it’s still in the ball park. Even Arsenal “current production” AKs are that much.

Saw a NIB KBI gun this weekend on a dealers table at the local gunshow for $1k. A little too high IMO but but since WASRS are going for $500-600 maybe not so out of line.
